Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Robert Gasser had a reason to be optimistic on Tuesday despite a loss to the Athletics.

A day after a thrilling series-opening game on Monday against the Athletics in which the Milwaukee Brewers won 15-14 in 12 innings, they found themselves on the losing side of the second game on Tuesday, 7-5.

For Brewers left-hander Robert Gasser, the numbers were not pretty, but he was able to achieve something that has been elusive for him since returning from Tommy John surgery: longevity.

Gasser pitched five innings in Tuesday’s start, his fourth of the season, and though he allowed eight hits, six earned runs (four home runs) and two walks, he struck out seven batters and threw 93 pitches, the most since his return to the mound for Milwaukee.

After the loss, he talked with the media about his outing.

"Yeah, going and knowing, it's like, you have a barrel," Gasser said. "Odds are it might probably go out. So I was trying to limit those, but I ran into a couple of them. Just got to execute a couple off-speed pitches a little bit better.

"I thought the four-seam played pretty well," he added. "Sinker was good. I mean, all of it played really well. Just a couple that got away from me that ended up out of the park."

After watching the wild and winding turn of events that was Monday’s game, Gasser knew that his team was never out of it, and his goal was to provide as much as he could from the mound.

"I mean, yeah, like you said, you saw it yesterday. You knew it's gonna be a dogfight and you just gotta roll with the punches," Gasser said. "And that you're never out of it. Even when you go down by a few like yesterday, you're gonna have a few and end up winning the game. So, the goal is to just go as deep as I can and keep the team in the game."

For Gasser, being able to go the distance he did was a good feeling.

"Yeah, most pitches I've thrown since surgery, I believe," he said. "So that's another good milestone for me. And yeah, battling. I mean, I had a couple of really good stretches of hitters in there. That was really good and I was happy about them. I guess I just, a couple pitches got away and just gotta live with it."

Gasser has faced his fair share of obstacles during his recovery, but he is beginning to feel like himself again as a pitcher.

"Yeah, I mean, I feel good," he said. "I feel.. I'm definitely still working through a couple things, but I feel like that's just more of a consistency. Getting dinged up a little bit early this year kinda set me off a little bit, but I'm getting back into the feel of being a pitcher and working through a lineup three, four times."
