With Brandon Woodruff sidelined, Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals scramble to fill rotation gaps ahead of a high-stakes doubleheader, grueling stretch before All-Star break.
The Milwaukee Brewers were put in quite the predicament with Brandon Woodruff returning to the Injured List.
Now, they're stuck with not one, but two unnamed starters heading into a crucial five-game divisional slate against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cardinals, much like the Brewers, only have eight games remaining before the All-Star break. A huge chunk of those games come against each other, including a doubleheader on Tuesday, July 7.
That said, it's not just the Brewers who have unnamed starters in the series. Hours away from first pitch in game one, both teams have yet to announce who will be starting in a pair of games.
Cardinals Staying Quiet on Doubleheader
The first game of two played on Tuesday, July 7, is a makeup from a postponed game back on Tuesday, May 5. The Brewers aren't keeping their game one starter a secret. Jacob Misiorowski will make his second to last start of the first half of the season, but it remains a mystery who he'll be facing.
Not only is it a mystery who he'll be facing in game one, but game two is a complete toss up. Obviously, each team gets a 27th man due to the doubleheader rule, so each could very well use some rotational help from Triple-A as neither team has announced a game two starter.
Overall, Milwaukee is in an interesting position as they're less than 24 hours out from a doubleheader and don't know either of their opponents starters. Ultimately, they just need to take things one game at a time to try and protect the Cardinals from gaining ground in the National League Central.
Brewers Undecided on Series Finale
Had Woodruff stayed healthy, this would've been his game for the taking. Big Woo would've had ample rest, but instead, the Brewers were stuck recalling reliever Drew Rom as the veteran once again wound up on the IL.
Milwaukee still has a few days to map things out, but their final mystery starter for the remainder of the first half comes on Thursday, July 9. The team has anxiously anticipated the return of Logan Henderson, but Coleman Crow is also nearing a return.
There's a chance those two could re-emerge in St. Louis, but Robert Gasser is a safe bet to earn a start as well. Other than that, the Brewers may need to go with a bullpen game, something this team's bullpen doesn't want to hear as they'll nearing the end of an 18-game stretch in 17 days.
