The Milwaukee Brewers were down to their final four outs against the St. Louis Cardinals when Christian Yelich delivered.

The Milwaukee Brewers were able to overcome being shutout through the first seven innings of Wednesday’s series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals to win the game 2-1 and complete the sweep of their division rivals.

Things had not gone well for the Brewers offensively, but in the eighth inning, they found a spark. With two outs and two men in scoring position, Christian Yelich hit an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1 before a critical error by Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn led to another run for Milwaukee to take the lead.

The Brewers were down to their final four outs when Yelich delivered his clutch hit and, after the game, he talked about the outcome.

"Yeah, you feel like you kind of stole one a little bit," Yelich told the media. "There's a credit to our pitchers for keeping us in the game. We were only chasing one run, so even though things weren't going real good for us on offense, when you're only down one, anything can happen, it can change quick.

"We were fortunate to get some traffic there in the eighth inning and do just enough," he added.

Before the eighth inning, St. Louis right-hander Dustin May was on the precipice of a no-hitter, but that was broken up by Garrett Mitchell, who hit a leadoff double in the eighth and ultimately scored the tying run. After Luis Rengifo laid down a successful bunt following Mitchell’s double, May’s outing was over.

"I mean, things can happen fast in baseball games," Yelich said. "You never really know when it's gonna happen, and that's why you gotta play through the finish line. We just knew if we just got one hit and we got some action going out there, that we felt like it was gonna kind of turn in our favor a little bit."

Yelich also took the time to credit May and explain why he was so difficult to hit most of the game.

"I mean, he's got really good stuff," Yelich said. "But, he was executing really well, keeping guys off balance, and getting us to expand off the plate a little bit. And he's making some great pitches, so he did a great job today and made it tough on us.

"First time facing him for a lot of guys," Yelich added. "And when the guys get really good stuff like that and you don't really have a lot to draw back on, it can be tough sometimes.

When he's out there, he's executing like that, and had a bunch of different pitches working for us. He kind of kept the whole lineup off balance."

With the win, the Brewers improved to 33-20 and are now 17-6 in May. For Yelich, the team’s recent success can be attributed to a consistent mindset and the performances of the pitching staff.

"Just taking one day at a time, just trying to win games," he said. "And pitchers have been going out there and giving us a chance, and we've been taking advantage of our opportunities."
