Milwaukee Brewers prospect Andrew Fischer reflected on his big home run for team Italy in the WBC.

In Team Italy’s 7-4 win over Great Britain during Sunday’s slate of the World Baseball Classic, Milwaukee Brewers prospect Andrew Fischer went deep to center field at Daikin Park to get Italy on the board in the bottom of the third inning and cut its deficit to one run.

Fischer rounded the bases with fiery jubilation as his mother looked on from the stands — cheering and expressing her own joy for her son’s accomplishment. Afterward, Fischer talked about her reaction with Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

“She's always yelling,” Fischer said. “I got a great support group up there right now and my family and friends back home. Just trying to be here, represent them; represent Italy and just compete and have fun.”

Fischer was the 20th pick in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft out of Tennessee by the Brewers.

He hails from New Jersey, but received the opportunity to play for Italy due to his family’s lineage, specifically his great-great-grandfather on his mother’s side being born there, according to a recent article by MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy.

In his postgame conversation with Morosi, Fischer expressed what it meant to be able to visit Italy last summer, especially in how it pertains to playing for its team right now in the WBC.

“Yeah, it was awesome,” he said. “I got a chance to go, like I said, with a bunch of friends and family as well. So those moments are special and I mean, this is just incredible to have moments like this out here on the field, represent them and, you know, this is a good group of guys. I'm learning a lot.

“You know, you got a ton of veterans out there with me, and I'm trying to take it all in.”

Italy improved to 2-0 in the WBC after the win, and Fischer praised the competitiveness of the team.

“Yeah, it's almost like a college atmosphere. Like it's just, it's a will to go on. It's the compete factor. I mean, we don't have a single hole in the lineup,” he said. “There's no one, there's no weakest link. It's a bunch of guys being dudes, you know. So, it's cool.”

“Two days in, we were bonded well. So, it's good.”

During the interview, Morosi told Fischer that he texted Tony Vitello, the new manager of the San Francisco Giants and Fischer’s former coach at Tennessee, which prompted Fischer to talk about the impact Vitello has had on him.

“It's been special. I mean, I can't thank him enough,” Fischer said. “He's given me an opportunity to play at Tennessee and you know, continue my career. And he helped develop me, not only as a player, but just like my character and as a man. So, you know, a lot of thanks to him.”

Italy will face off against Team USA at Daikin Park on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET.
