In the Milwaukee Brewers’ 13-12 win over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, Brice Turang could not be denied at the plate.
With the bat in his hands, Turang launched two home runs in his three at-bats, one of which was a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning that tied the game back up after the Brewers fell into an 8-1 hole.
On Tuesday, Turang survived a 14-pitch at-bat to secure a walk, illustrating his improved discipline at the plate.
“Yeah, I've been feeling good,” Turang said after being responsible for five RBIs in Wednesday’s high-scoring affair. “Seeing the ball well, just been working hard in the cage to get the swing right. And today felt really good."
Upon revisiting his battle at the plate that ended in a walk, Turang made it clear that he was seeing the ball well; he was just a little late on his approach. On Wednesday, his timing was right where it needed to be.
Turang will play for Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, but that has not influenced any changes in his timing.
“Not really, I don't think so.” Turang said. “I've been coming into Spring Training basically ready to go. Except for the live at-bats, which you get here. So, once you get them every day and you start getting used to it again and you find your timing, you might have to make a little bit of an adjustment.
“I'm just excited to go play, man,” Turang said about the WBC. “Just trying to win a game, win a ballgame and yeah, that's kind of about it. Swing feels good, and we got a couple games left before we all head out, and I'm really excited for that, for sure.”
Year over year, Turang has improved his metrics as a hitter. Last season, he posted a .288 batting average, a .359 on-base percentage, and a .435 slugging percentage with a .794 OPS in 156 games. He also notched 18 home runs and 81 RBIs in the campaign.
However, Turang struggled mightily in the postseason. In nine playoff games, he posted a dismal .114 batting average (4-for-35) and 14 strikeouts. With the WBC factoring into this Spring Training slate, it has changed how Turang is viewing it.
“Yeah, a little bit,” Turang said. “When you're just going through your spring, maybe you have the first couple games and you're not as, I don't know, I wouldn't say worried.
"But you just want to feel right, want to be right before you head out and you got, I wouldn't say a shorter time period," Turang said. "But you kind of have less games, maybe some less at-bats to get ready. I'm very blessed with the opportunity to do that and then come back and get back with the guys and go chase our goal.”
