Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Trevor Megill made his way onto the mound for the first time during Milwaukee's Spring Training slate in its 3-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday..
Megill, 32, pitched one inning and recorded a strikeout and a walk.
"Well, we're two weeks in the camp now," Megill said. "So, kind of a little bit of the same timeline as last season. Just get your feet under you, get everything going, and then go and start attacking hitters. Felt good out there, felt behind it; was in the zone where I wanted to be."
Megill is entering his sixth MLB season and fourth with the Brewers. In his time, he has primarily served as a closer. However, Sunday’s game saw him take the mound after Chad Patrick got the start.
"Spring training — we all just kind of get in early, get our work done, and wherever you pitch, it's, where you pitch," Megill said about his spot in the rotation. "I mean, we've been doing it for a couple years now, so it's not too much of an adjustment to wait a couple more hours to pitch.
"But yeah, I don't mind it."
Last season, Megill appeared in 50 games for the Brewers and logged a 6-3 record with a 2.49 ERA. He also notched a career-high 30 saves and six blown saves.
Megill suffered a right flexor strain in late August that compelled him to the dugout for nearly the rest of the season. With March underway, he is in a better spot in terms of his health.
"I'm all healthy, everything, I mean, probably PRP happened, and probably I'd say three, four weeks after that's done, you're good to go," Megill said. "Elbow doesn't feel like an issue, just kind of, you mentioned earlier in camp, just kind of those offseason stiffness and kind of just working out some quirks in the body and getting myself kind of limber like I was last year.
"But other than that, everything feels very, very good right now."
For the majority of Megill’s career, he has prioritized getting his velocity where he wanted it first. But last year’s injury and age are factors in a slight change or routine.
"Most years past, I kind of try to work backwards and get Velo before location," he said. "And for the last few years, that's felt great. And then this year, with the PRP and everything, I mean, we try to get the Velo as in getting reps and, what do you wanna call it? Just endurance on the elbow, so that's kind of what that was.
"So it's kind of the older you get, the more patient you got to be. I'm still 25 in my mind, but just gotta know that it's coming," Megill said. "Just do your preparation, do all your work, and everything's gonna take care of itself on game day when it comes on the 28th."
