The Milwaukee Brewers were incredibly close to keeping their winning streak alive against the San Diego Padres.
The Milwaukee Brewers had their five-game winning streak snapped with a 3-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.
There were key moments and performances throughout the evening, let’s revisit them:
Ninth Inning Collapse
When it came to defensive execution, the Brewers did everything right for most of the game.
It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Milwaukee used small ball to its advantage to get a run across and make it a 1-0 game. The Brewers’ defense continued to go to work and keep the Padres off the board. They needed to just get through one more frame to seal the deal.
Then, with just one out needed to secure the win in the ninth inning, it all fell apart.
In the top of the ninth, the Brewers handed the ball to Abner Uribe, who has mostly been a reliable closer for his team. But, after he forced Fernando Tatis Jr. into a groundout and Manny Machado into a line out, the Padres began to find life.
It began with Uribe giving up a single to Miguel Andujar before subsequently walking Xander Bogaerts. With two runners on, Uribe delivered a slider to Gavin Sheets in the top of the zone, and Sheets made him pay by taking it over the wall in right-center field.
What was once a 1-0 lead became a 3-1 deficit for the Brewers in an instant, and they were unable to recover.
Jacob Misiorowski’s Big Night Interrupted
Despite the loss, Brewers right-hander Jacob Misiorowski continues to be a star for his team.
Misiorowski made his ninth start of the season on Monday. He carried the momentum from his historic start against the New York Yankees on May 8, when he struck out 11 batters and only allowed two hits through six shutout innings of work.
Through seven shutout innings on Wednesday, Misiorowski was dealing as he struck out 10 batters and only allowed four hits. However, what was a near-perfect night was forced to end when he exited the game with cramping in his quad.
It is the second time in his last three starts that Misiorowski has had to leave the game with cramping in his leg, and both times he was producing at an elite level. The Brewers are back in action against the Padres for the series finale on Thursday at 12:40 p.m. CT.
