Rays Make Major Lineup Change vs. Brewers in World Series Game 3

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash benches hot-hitting Jonathan Aranda, turning to Ryan Vilade in Game 3 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The first major lineup change of the World Series is here, and to say it's a big one would be an understatement.

For the first time this postseason, Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash has benched first baseman Jonathan Aranda.

Yes, the same Aranda who went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run in Game 1. The 28-year-old is a left-handed batter, so seeing Milwaukee Brewers southpaw Robert Gasser likely has a lot to do with this decision.

That said, Aranda did make a crucial error at first base that allowed what could be called the deciding run to score in Game 2.

Aranda's abilities at the plate aren't enough to warrant keeping him at first base in Game 3, and Cash knew he couldn't take Yandy Diaz out of the designated hitter spot, even though Diaz is 0-for-9 this series.

Brewers Game 3 lineup

  • Jackson Chourio, LF
  • Jake Bauers, 1B
  • Christian Yelich, DH
  • William Contreras, C
  • Brice Turang, 2B
  • Garrett Mitchell, CF
  • Cooper Pratt, SS
  • Sal Frelick, RF
  • David Hamilton, 3B

If this Brewers lineup looks eerily similar to what Pat Murphy rolled out in the first two games, that's because it's the exact same thing.

The old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" has never been more meaningful. The only notable changes Murphy would be making are swapping out Andrew Vaughn for Christian Yelich, Luis Lara for Sal Frelick, and Joey Ortiz for David Hamilton, but Freddy Peralta is a right-handed pitcher, so there was no need to mess with the lineup that got them the first two wins in Milwaukee.

Rays Game 3 lineup

  • Yandy Diaz, DH
  • Ryan Vilade, 1B
  • Chandler Simpson, LF
  • Junior Caminero, 3B
  • Ben Williamson, 2B
  • Jonny DeLuca, CF
  • Victor Mesa Jr., RF
  • Nick Fortes, C
  • Taylor Walls, SS

Vilade, 27, is 0-for-2 with a strikeout in this World Series. He's hitting just .143 this postseason, and it's worth noting that comes with a limited sample size of seven at-bats.

Vilade has drawn a pair of walks, but his lone hit was a big one. In Game 3 of the American League Division Series, Vilade homered off Max Fried to help guide the Rays to a sweep in the 4-3 victory.

Cash has never had Vilade in the game for more than two at-bats, so it's safe to assume that once Gasser is out of the game, depending on matchups with the Brewers bullpen, Aranda will replace the Texas native.

Even with Diaz struggling, he hasn't been removed from the leadoff spot, and it's notable that Chandler Simpson continues to hit above Junior Caminero in the lineup.
