Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Blake Perkins delivered a special tribute on Mother's Day.
In the Milwaukee Brewers’ 4-3 win over the New York Yankees on Mother’s Day, the moment was significant, and emotional, for Brewers outfielder Blake Perkins.
It was Perkins’ first Mother’s Day since losing his mother, Carisa Sharrett, to colon cancer in July. With his team down 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Perkins took the plate and delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to center field to give Milwaukee the lead.
After the game, Perkins spoke with the media about the magnitude of the afternoon and the emotions surrounding it.
"Yeah, I think just grateful I got to play today," Perkins told the media. "I mean, that's pretty special. I've been looking forward to playing today and obviously to come through on the spot is always great.
"But yeah," he added. "It's been a lot of emotions for me today. Mostly joy and just getting to play for my mom today, and I have so many friends and family members back home that are supporting and yeah, it was good. It's joy, a lot of joy."
Before the game, Perkins' emotions were caught in limbo, but he never wavered into sadness.
"Honestly, once I got out there and the game started, it was all good," Perkins said. "I'd say the pre-game stuff, just getting ready was, I don't know, I'm not saying it was bad emotions, just kind of it's the first time, the first year I've celebrated this holiday without her.
"So, it was just good, it was good," he added. "I felt her here with me, and obviously I got all the guys here who got my back. And it was a good day, it was a good Brewers win."
Perkins, 29, began his pro career after being selected by the Washington Nationals with the 69th pick in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft. After stints with the minor-league systems of the Nationals, the Kansas City Royals, and the Yankees, Perkins elected free agency in November 2022.
Less than two weeks after Perkins entered free agency, the Brewers signed him and, on April 19, 2023, he made his MLB debut. Fast forward to Sunday, and Perkins was made his 21st appearance of the 2026 season with Milwaukee.
For Perkins, feeling the support of his teammates meant a lot.
"Yeah, I mean, I'm so happy to be here and not be by myself," he said. "I love being with these guys, and I think it shows how much we care about each other when you see us play on the field."
The journey has not been easy for Perkins, but his faith and support system have given him strength.
"I mean, it starts with my faith in Jesus," Perkins said. "And then it goes to me and my wife, my family, and these guys here keeping me grounded. Obviously, Murph's a big help too, cuz you're right, baseball's definitely a tough game mentally with ups and downs. So, just trying to take it a day at a time and ask for help if I need it."
