The Milwaukee Brewers were on the cusp of a shutout win. Then, it all went wrong against the San Diego Padres.

The Milwaukee Brewers squandered a dominant pitching performance by Jacob Misiorowski and a strong defensive night overall in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game against the San Diego Padres, which ultimately led to a 3-1 loss.

Misiorowski recorded 10 strikeouts while only allowing four hits through seven shutout innings before cramping in his quad during warmup pitches in the eighth inning forced him out of the game. It marked the second time in his last three starts that Misiorowski has had a strong outing cut short due to cramping in his leg.

After keeping the Padres off the scoreboard throughout the game, closer Abner Uribe and the Brewers’ defense needed just one more out in the top of the ninth inning to complete the shutout victory.

But Uribe, who has otherwise been reliable, allowed a single and a walk before San Diego left fielder Gavin Sheets launched a three-run home run to right-center field.

The Brewers, who could only manage one run to that point, did not have the offensive momentum to respond with their final three outs in the bottom of the frame. After the game, manager Pat Murphy reacted to the loss as well as Misiorowski having another strong outing cut short by leg cramps.

"Yeah, yep, quad," Murphy said about Misiorowski’s exit. "I don't think that was the same thing, but not sure."

For Murphy and the Brewers, this is a loss they will simply have to move past.

"Yeah, I mean, you know, you have to swallow it," Murphy said. "That's part of it. You're gonna have three or four of these every year. We got some great performances tonight, we faced a really good pitcher who we got out of there and, you know, left some guys on base, but still a lot of really good performances.

"You know, Misiorowski was really, really good," Murphy added. "Especially in the middle of the game, and then Ashby was really really good, and Abner, you know, walked the guy and made a bad pitch, and then, you know, one hanging slider.

"It's Major League Baseball, the guys are capable," Murphy said. "Hats off to Sheets; great swing; did it in the clutch. You know, hats off to him."

When it comes to repeat occurrences of Misiorowski dealing with outing-ending cramps, Murphy is not concerned. He added that Misiorowski wanted to stay on the mound.

"I think that you know, he put so much into it," Murphy said. "I think people deal with that, but we have people here to get it under control. I don’t think it’s a concern. He really wanted to, and he finished the seventh. You know, I thought he was trying to empty the tank there."

The Brewers will try and capture the series victory when they conclude their meeting with the Padres on Thursday at 12:40 p.m. CT.
