The Milwaukee Brewers gutted out a close win on Saturday. Their victory was largely thanks to William Contreras.
A day after earning a 6-0 shutout win, the Milwaukee Brewers were able to outlast the New York Yankees in extra innings on Saturday, 4-3, to take the series over one of baseball's winningest teams this season.
Heading into the bottom of the 10th inning, the Brewers found themselves down 3-2 and needed to make something happen to avoid the loss, and they were able to do so.
After center fielder Garrett Mitchell reached third base thanks to a wild pitch by Yankees reliever Fernando Cruz, third baseman Luis Rengifo drew a walk and left fielder Jackson Chourio reached first base on a grounder that New York shortstop Jose Caballero mishandled.
After Chourio’s hit brought Mitchell across home plate to tie the game, second baseman Brice Turang reached on a fielder’s choice that brought Rengifo to third base. Then, catcher William Contreras sealed the deal with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Rengifo home.
After the game, Contreras talked about what was going through his head during a critical at-bat.
"I think I was trying to see it a little deeper there and emphasize putting the ball in the air," Contreras told the media. "So, I wasn't trying to do too much. I wasn't trying to pull it and leave the yard. I was just trying to make sure that I could put the ball in the air and help the team win."
Contreras also credited the pitching staff, who combined for 15 strikeouts in the win.
"Yeah, I think it's been the best game that we've been able to put together from a pitching staff perspective," Contreras said. "So, I think everyone knows the team that they have over there and the talent that they have in the lineup.
"So, just tremendous credit to the guys in the way they've came out and been able to attack," he added. "Again, I think this has been probably the best that we've thrown the ball."
Among those who took the mound for the Brewers on Saturday was Aaron Ashby, who closed the game for Milwaukee with two innings of work and three strikeouts while allowing a run, a hit, and a walk. His efforts earned him the winning decision, pushing him to 7-0 on the year.
"Yeah, that's the same Ashby we saw today is the Ashby that we've always known," Contreras said. "So, the pitches and the stuff, it's all there. It's tremendous. But I think the part about him is he wants to go out and compete and he wants to go out and win.
"And I think that's the part that I like most about him is his willingness to go out there and do whatever it takes to get the win," Contreras added.
The Brewers will aim for the series sweep on Sunday.
