The Milwaukee Brewers won another game with Kyle Harrison on the mound. Once again, he pitched well.
The Milwaukee Brewers were able to defeat the Kansas City Royals on Easter Sunday, 8-5, to win their third series in a row and improve to 7-2. In the win, left-hander Kyle Harrison got the starting nod.
Harrison was solid in his outing. He went 5 ⅓ innings with six strikeouts while allowing three hits, two earned runs, and two walks. After the game, he talked with the media about how his first start of the season carried over into Sunday’s outing.
“Yeah, that's where we start,” Harrison said. “All my pitches tunnel off the fastball and it's important to get ahead in counts and attack these hitters and try to get in the dugout as quick as possible.”
The 24-year-old southpaw from San Jose, Calif., was very good in his first start for the Brewers as well on March 30 despite the game resulting in a 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays for his team. Regardless, Harrison went five innings and struck out eight batters while allowing four hits, one earned run and one walk.
Harrison also took the time to praise William Contreras, who was his backstop for both of his starts thus far.
“It's cool, it's cool,” Harrison said. “It's that conviction, even in the pen before, it's seeing what's worked, it's this hitter, ‘I think we should do this.’ It's those conversations that were happening and ultimately on the mound, it's like trust it and trust this guy behind the dish, he's great. And just execute, that's all you can do, and it's great.”
After a rough third inning in which Harrison hit a batter and allowed a home run, a walk, a single, and a wild pitch, he was able to retire eight of the next nine batters he faced before his day ended.
Harrison gave credit to the defense and praised a throw from newly acquired right fielder Luis Matos to home plate to get Bobby Witt Jr. out after a single by Vinnie Pasquantino.
“Definitely huge,” Harrison said, “I mean, the defense made a bunch of great plays behind me today. So, if it wasn't for that, we know when I got through that..
“But Matos, yeah, coming up big with that throw,” Harrison added. “And my job's just to get back in the zone and execute, and yeah, on to the next guy.”
Through his first two starts, Harrison expressed pleasure with multiple parts of his game.
“Just the conviction,” he said. “The conviction I'm having with my stuff and throwing through the zone, per se. And really just trying to stay ahead of hitters, a couple walks here and there, but I felt like I did a good job of getting back in the counts and ultimately finishing guys, that's the thing that I need to get better at.”
