The Milwaukee Brewers needed to shore up the roster with Christian Yelich heading to the IL, and they made their choice.
With the news of Christian Yelich headed to the 10-day Injured List due to a left groin strain, the Milwaukee Brewers have called up outfielder Greg Jones.
Ahead of Milwaukee’s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, Jones spoke with the media.
“I was just trying to put myself in the best opportunity to help the team out in the best way I can,” Jones said. “And that's just being on base. And I kind of just took that upon myself to try to make that the biggest part of my game this year. And it's kind of been working out for me.”
Jones, 28, was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 22nd pick in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft. On March 21, 2024, Tampa Bay traded him to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for left-hander Joe Rock. Less than three months later, he would make his MLB debut.
Jones appeared in six games with the Rockies in 2024 before he was later claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox ahead of the beginning of the 2025 season. Jones played in three games for Chicago before his release last May.
From there, the Houston Astros signed Jones, and he would spend the remainder of the 2025 season in their minor-league system before electing free agency in November. The Brewers subsequently signed him to a minor-league contract on Dec. 11 and invited him to spring training in January.
Despite a small sample size, Jones has demonstrated a potent bat with Triple-A Nashville this season. In 13 games (41 at-bats) Jones has hit .317 with an .852 OPS. He has also stolen seven bases.
“You know, this is always the ultimate goal,” Jones said about being called up. “So, when you're down there, you're just doing the little things every single day. So like when you get called up here, you're ready to roll right into it.”
While Jones does not know how things will play out, he remains ready for the opportunity at hand.
“You know, you can always think you're ready,” Jones said. “But, you know, until you get here, until you get into moving things and seeing where you're needed, you just never know. But yeah, I'm ready.
“I mean, I'm just trying to be here and make as much as I can with the opportunity that I'm given,” he added. “So whatever happens, happens.”
Jones also spoke fondly about his time with the team during spring training.
“What a fantastic group to be around,” he said. “You know, Pat does a good job with the whole staff here and just keeping everyone kind of family oriented. And I'm just happy to be part of it.”
