Garrett Mitchell’s defensive heroics and clutch walk-off single propelled the Milwaukee Brewers to their 60th win, backed by Joey Ortiz’s power surge and a dominant performance from the bullpen.
The Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff put on a clinic coming out of the All-Star break.
Logan Henderson gave up a solo home run in the fifth inning, but that was the lone run allowed as Milwaukee took care of the Miami Marlins in extra innings, 2-1.
Garrett Mitchell was the hero in the 10th as he recorded a two-out single up the middle that scored Jackson Chourio. Things weren't looking the best at times, but Mitchell came up huge in this game, both offensively and defensively.
Joey Ortiz continues to rake as he answered with a solo home run of his own in the fifth inning for his fourth of the year.
Ortiz can't be denied
Despite batting ninth in the lineup and having to battle to be an everyday player, Ortiz continues to prove his worth. Now that David Hamilton is out, it's been much easier for manager Pat Murphy to include the 28-year-old in the lineup on a daily basis. Lately though, Ortiz has been undeniable.
Two of his four home runs have come in the month of July, a month where he's slashing .318/.333/.523. Knowing his batting average on the year is only .230, that's a huge improvement, as is his .856 OPS to the .617 it's been here in 2026.
Ortiz has five hits in his last three games and three of his homers have come since June 29.
Mitchell was unbelievable
Mitchell bailed out Trevor Megill in the ninth inning with a tremendous over-the-head catch, one that undoubtedly saved a run. The Brewers had a few chances to walk it off in the ninth, but ultimately, it was Mitchell who made another unbelievable catch in the 10th to save Craig Yoho.
Somehow, Mitchell had a chance to hit in the bottom of the 10th and he made sure this opportunity didn't go to waste. After Brice Turang and Jake Bauers struck out swinging, Mitchell blasted a two-out, two-strike single to center that secured the Brewers their 60th win of the season.
Brewers bullpen delivered
There was slight concern as to why Henderson was pulled after five innings, but it seemed to be precautionary, more than anything.
Chad Patrick shockingly only pitched one inning before he was replaced with Aaron Ashby. Abner Uribe then did his thing before Megill and Yoho closed things out.
This bullpen may have allowed four hits, but they struck out five batters and didn't walk a single one. In the end, Yoho picked up his first career win in the majors as he gave this team a huge boost in the 10th, not even allowing the ghost runner to score.
