The Milwaukee Brewers finally get Christian Yelich back. Why is it significant?
The Milwaukee Brewers are returning a critical piece to their lineup when they welcome back Christian Yelich ahead of Tuesday’s series-opener against the San Diego Padres.
The Brewers announced that they were reinstating Yelich from the 10-day Injured List while optioning first baseman/outfielder Tyler Black to Triple-A Nashville. Yelich has missed a month after suffering a left adductor strain on April 12 against the Washington Nationals.
After returning Jackson Chourio and Andrew Vaughn to the lineup on May 4, the addition of Yelich will add additional help. So, what do the Brewers get with his return?
A Reliable Bat
When it comes to offense, Yelich has thrived for most of his career, and he has given a high level of production to the Brewers since donning the jersey in 2018.
Before getting hurt this season, Yelich was slashing .314/.375/.451 with an .826 OPS in 15 games. In 51 at-bats, he notched 16 hits (including two doubles, one triple and one home run) and 10 RBIs while drawing five walks.
Apart from the 2020 and 2021 season, Yelich has never hit below a .250 average. The 2026 campaign in Yelich’s 14th season in Major League Baseball, and in five of those (including this season) he has hit .300 or better and has posted four seasons of 20-plus home runs.
A Solid Defender
When Yelich is not playing designated hitter, he can be found in the outfield.
Most of Yelich’s career has been spent in left field when it is time for him to join the defense, and he has proven to be good throughout the years. Through 980 career games in left field (916 starts), Yelich carries a .992 fielding percentage with 1,607 putouts and 31 assists while committing 13 errors in 1,651 total chances.
A Veteran Presence
At multiple key positions, the Brewers have a lot of talent, but they are also young.
Players like outfielder Jackson Chourio (22), second baseman Brice Turang (26 and right-hander Jacob Misiorowski (24) look to be the franchise talents of the present and the future. Andrew Vaughn (28) and William Contreras (28) are also high-level young contributors.
Yelich, 34, is the oldest player on Milwaukee’s active roster, and while he may not play the same position as most of the aforementioned players, his voice and experience as a former MVP and three-time All-Star still carries significant weight in a clubhouse that is always looking to contend and take the next step.
