With a mounting Injury List thinning their southpaw depth, the Milwaukee Brewers must revitalize its elite bullpen.
The Milwaukee Brewers already possess one of the best bullpens in MLB.
Even so, adding another experienced reliever before the stretch run could make one of the National League’s strongest pitching staffs even better.
Milwaukee currently owns the fifth-best bullpen ERA in MLB at 3.58.
Despite that success, injuries have created a need for additional left-handed depth.
DL Hall, Rob Zastryzny, and Angel Zerpa all remain on the Injured List, leaving the Brewers with fewer left-handed options than they would prefer.
That situation makes veteran reliever Danny Coulombe an intriguing possibility.
The Boston Red Sox designated Coulombe for assignment on Saturday after he opened the season with them on a one-year, $1 million contract that included incentives.
His overall numbers have been disappointing.
Before being designated for assignment, Coulombe posted a 4.50 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in 22 innings across 29 appearances. He recorded 10 strikeouts against 15 walks.
Those statistics do not tell the entire story of his recent career.
Coulombe has consistently demonstrated that he can be an effective late-inning reliever.
He has not finished a season with an ERA above 3.67 since 2021 with the Minnesota Twins.
He also has not finished a season above a 2.81 ERA since 2023 with the Baltimore Orioles.
Last season, he produced a 2.30 ERA in 43 innings over 55 appearances while splitting time between the Twins and Texas Rangers.
That track record makes him an interesting bounce-back candidate.
Few organizations have developed pitchers as effectively as Milwaukee over the past several years.
If any team can help Coulombe regain his previous form, the Brewers appear to be one of the best candidates.
Acquiring him would also require very little risk.
Milwaukee would simply need to place a waiver claim and hope no team ahead of it submits a claim first.
The Brewers would not need to surrender prospects or commit significant money.
If Coulombe returns to pitching the way he did a year ago, Milwaukee would strengthen an already impressive bullpen at minimal cost.
If he continues to struggle, the Brewers could simply move on, just as Boston did.
Contending teams are always searching for additional pitching.
Finding experienced relievers without sacrificing future assets is far more difficult.
That opportunity now exists for Milwaukee, one of the biggest challengers to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Adding another experienced left-handed reliever could prove valuable during the final months of the season.
Coulombe has built his career on command, deception, and an ability to consistently keep hitters uncomfortable.
Rather than relying on overpowering velocity, he changes speeds effectively and locates his pitches with precision. Because of this, he succeeds against both left-handed and right-handed hitters.
His experience in high-pressure situations has also helped him develop the confidence to attack hitters instead of pitching cautiously.
Those qualities often give veteran relievers an opportunity to rebound quickly after difficult stretches.
Experienced arms like Coulombe can become valuable contributors simply by refining mechanics and restoring confidence.
That combination of experience, affordability, and upside makes him an intriguing option for contenders seeking bullpen depth.
