The Milwaukee Brewers should strongly consider making one aggressive move before Monday’s 6 p.m. ET trade deadline. And no, not because the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal.
Whether that means reuniting with right-hander Freddy Peralta or acquiring New York Mets reliever Luke Weaver, either move would strengthen a roster already positioned to make a deep postseason run.
The Brewers have built a reputation for remaining competitive while consistently developing young talent.
That philosophy was evident last offseason when Milwaukee made one of the organization’s biggest decisions by trading Peralta to the Mets.
In return, the Brewers acquired shortstop Jett Williams and right-hander Brandon Sproat, adding two highly regarded young players while New York focused on maximizing its World Series window.
Milwaukee has handled Peralta’s departure remarkably well.
Even so, an unexpected reunion makes sense.
A reunion worth exploring
Peralta’s remaining salary of approximately $2.35 million would not represent a significant financial obstacle for the Brewers, making the possibility more realistic than many would initially expect.
Although baseball rarely sees teams reacquire players shortly after trading them away, there is precedent. One recent example came when the Mets sent Justin Verlander back to the Houston Astros during the 2023 season.
Peralta remains one of MLB’s more dependable starters.
The two-time All-Star has a 4.99 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 113:48 K:BB in 113.2 innings across 22 starts with New York this season.
His success in Milwaukee is also well documented.
Last year, he won 17 games, the highest total in the National League, and posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 204:66 K:BB in 176.2 innings over 33 starts, helping lead the Brewers to the National League Championship Series against the Dodgers.
While Milwaukee has continued winning without him, adding an experienced frontline starter before October could further strengthen an already dangerous rotation.
How Weaver can help Brewers
Another intriguing option is Weaver.
Acquiring the veteran right-hander would provide the Brewers with another dependable high-leverage reliever capable of handling some of the biggest outs in postseason games.
The 32-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding season with the Mets, posting a 1.88 ERA and 0.84 WHIP with one save and 15 holds in 43 innings across 41 appearances.
He’s recorded 44 strikeouts against 11 walks, continuing to establish himself as one of the National League’s most effective relievers.
An additional advantage is Weaver’s contract.
Rather than becoming a short-term rental, he remains under team control through the 2027 season as part of his two-year, $22 million agreement.
Peralta and Weaver’s value
Peralta and Weaver offer different skill sets, but both possess qualities contenders consistently seek.
Peralta has built his reputation on competing with confidence, embracing pressure, and consistently taking the ball in meaningful games.
His experience leading a rotation and performing in October would immediately benefit any postseason contender.
Weaver provides value in a different way. He has demonstrated remarkable adaptability throughout his career, successfully transitioning into a high-leverage bullpen role while becoming one of MLB’s most dependable late-inning relievers.
His composure, preparation, and ability to execute in pressure situations make him an ideal fit for World Series-caliber teams.
Whether Milwaukee prioritizes another established starter or an elite reliever, either move would strengthen both the Brewers’ postseason outlook and their chances of matching up with the National League’s best teams.
