With three postseason wins and 10 days of rest, DL Hall emerges as one of the Milwaukee Brewers’ most versatile weapon to neutralize the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 of the World Series.
The Milwaukee Brewers have several dependable postseason weapons in their bullpen, but none enters Game 2 of the World Series as rested as DL Hall.
Milwaukee faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series on Oct. 11 and earned a 2-1 victory.
Jacob Misiorowski started for the Brewers and gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 4.1 innings.
Milwaukee’s bullpen took control after Misiorowski departed, delivering 4.2 scoreless innings beginning with Hall.
The left-hander replaced Misiorowski during the fifth inning and completed the frame by recording two outs on only four pitches. His brief but important contribution put him in position to earn the win.
A difference-maker for Brewers
Hall made another significant contribution in Game 3 on Oct. 14. He threw 2.1 scoreless innings in Milwaukee’s 6-2 road victory against Los Angeles, recording two strikeouts and earning the win.
Hall has pitched 5.1 scoreless innings over four postseason appearances this year, surrendering only two hits. He has earned three postseason wins, all this season, and is tied Misiorowski for the Brewers’ franchise record.
The left-hander did not pitch during Milwaukee’s 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday.
Hall began warming up in the bullpen when Tampa Bay rallied during the ninth inning. However, manager Pat Murphy allowed closer Trevor Megill to work through the trouble rather than making another pitching change.
That decision left Hall rested and available for Game 2. He has not appeared in a game for 10 days, making him one of Murphy’s freshest options as Milwaukee attempts to take further control of the World Series.
Hall’s importance moving forward
Hall could make a significant difference as one of Murphy’s primary relief weapons against Tampa Bay. His ability to enter during the middle of an inning gives Murphy an answer when a starter encounters trouble before reaching the later frames.
He’s also demonstrated that he can record an important out quickly or remain in the game for multiple innings. That versatility gives Murphy freedom to adjust his bullpen plan according to the score, opposing hitters and the performance of Milwaukee’s starter.
Hall does not need a clearly defined inning to influence a game. He can inherit runners, neutralize a dangerous portion of Tampa Bay’s lineup or bridge the distance between the rotation and Milwaukee’s late inning relievers.
His composure has also been important during October. Hall has entered demanding situations without allowing the moment to alter his approach. He attacks hitters, limits damage and keeps the Brewers within reach when games become tense.
After remaining unused in the World Series opener, Hall gives Milwaukee a rested and adaptable option for Game 2. That could become particularly valuable if Murphy needs several innings from his bullpen.
