The Milwaukee Brewers' bats overcame a rough outing by Jacob Misiorowski against the Chicago Cubs.
The Milwaukee Brewers won the third game in their four-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, 9-5 at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
After an embarrassing 17-3 series-opening loss on Monday to the Cubs, the Brewers have bounced back nicely.
Trading blows
Early in the game, the offenses of both clubs were humming.
Milwaukee got things started in the top of the first inning when Andrew Vaughn hit a two-out single that was followed by a single off the bat of William Contreras. Then, Jake Bauers walked, and rookie Luis Lara hit an RBI single that loaded the bases.
Following Lara’s single, Gary Sanchez drew a walk that scored another run. However, the Brewers did not make it out of the inning with the lead, as Jacob Misiorowski walked Pete Crow-Armstrong before giving up a two-run home run to Alex Bregman.
In the second inning, Milwaukee struck again in the form of a Jackson Chourio solo home run, marking his 21st of the season. Yet Chicago hit Misiorowski hard again in the bottom of the second via a triple by Matt Shaw, an RBI single by Tyrone Taylor and a two-RBI single by Bregman that followed up two consecutive walks by Misiorowski.
By the end of the second, the Cubs had outscored the Brewers 3-1, and they led 5-3. It was clear it was not Misiorowski’s night, but he made it to the bottom of the fifth inning before he was replaced by JoJo Romero.
In a star-studded season for Misiorowski, Wednesday marked a rare bad outing for the 24-year-old. By the end of his evening, Misiorowski had allowed five hits, five earned runs and four walks while striking out five batters over four innings of work.
It was a game in which the Brewers’ ace came back down to earth and looked human, but it did not stop his team from finding a way to win.
Taking over
After a scoreless third inning for both teams, Milwaukee gave the Cubs a taste of their own medicine by producing a three-run fourth inning thanks to a double by Chourio and successful small-ball tactics.
The Brewers did not stop there, either, as they added one more run in the seventh and two more runs in the ninth. After getting outdueled early, Milwaukee went on to outscore Chicago 6-0 throughout the rest of the game.
The bullpen did well in applying support to Misiorowski’s subpar outing, and the offense kept doing its thing. The Brewers will aim to win the series on Thursday at 6:15 p.m. CT.
