The Milwaukee Brewers might have a massive move up their sleeve.
The 2026 Major League Baseball season is coming up on another pivotal point as the Aug. 3 Trade Deadline is just one week away.
That means it's time for the Milwaukee Brewers to answer one very important question through their actions: How serious are they about contending this season?
The question may seem rhetorical, given the Brewers' strong performance this year and their history of making the postseason. Sure, Milwaukee can make a nice run with the current roster, but if it wants to win a World Series, it needs to make a move that can help remove the large, Los Angeles Dodgers-sized obstacle in its way.
Let’s face it. The Dodgers have an ambitious goal of their own, and it does not involve winning their first World Series like the Brewers, but rather being the first team to win three-straight since the 1998-00 New York Yankees.
On top of their star-studded lineup that already won back-to-back titles, the Dodgers decided to add even more firepower. Last season, after finishing with the best record in baseball, the Brewers were vanquished by Los Angeles in the National League Championship Series.
If Milwaukee meets the Dodgers again in the postseason, which is a strong possibility, it will need to make a significant move to stand toe to toe with its opponent.
The player who can help might be on his way, and his name is Tarik Skubal.
Brewers predicted to land Skubal
Brewers fans should have a reason to at least get moderately excited, and that is because there is a growing belief that Milwaukee can land Skubal at the deadline from the Detroit Tigers.
Recently, The Athletic’s MLB Staff made predictions for each team ahead of the Deadline, and its bold prediction for the Brewers was that Milwaukee would land Skubal. Sure, one can argue that a bold prediction does not sound as good as more concrete evidence, but the idea of Skubal to the Brewers once started as a whisper, something that could be brushed off easily. Now, it has a little more traction.
If the Brewers decide to really pursue Skubal, and if they successfully land him, it would create a lethal, if not unstoppable, one-two punch with Jacob Misiorowski. Additionally, Kyle Harrison could then become a very strong third option in the rotation.
Landing the back-to-back American League Cy Young Award winner will not be easy, and the trade will probably serve as no more than a rental given what Skubal will command in the free agent market after this season, but one thing is certain: if the Brewers want to win it all, it may take a seismic, daring move like this.
