MLB Network Radio's Steve Phillips proposed a wild overpay for the Milwaukee Brewers to bring in Detroit Tigers' Tarik Skubal.
The MLB Trade Deadline will be here before we know it, and that will finally stop people from proposing deals that are nowhere near beneficial for the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Detroit Tigers are going to get every penny out of Tarik Skubal, as they should. He's a once-in-a-lifetime talent, but they don't seem to be making the playoffs this season, and it's not like they have the money to pay Skubal after this year is done with.
Trading him is the correct move, as much as that sucks for Tigers fans, and even for Skubal to hear.
At the end of the day, baseball is a business, but it's not a charity. Steve Phillips recently proposed a monster trade on MLB Network Radio, one that is laughable, to say the least.
Phillips: Brewers should trade top prospects plus Ashby
In one of the most ridiculous proposed trade packages of the season, Phillips had the following to say about how the Brewers could acquire Skubal: "They're going to have to give up Jesus Made, the top prospect in their organization."
If Brewers fans could stop Phillips right there, they absolutely would've. Made isn't just the top prospect Milwaukee has, but he's the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball. Made is as untouchable as it gets, and he isn't going anywhere.
Don't worry though; Phillips was just getting started: "They're likely gonna have to give up Luis Lara as well."
Phillips said he thinks those two are going to have to "lead the way in the deal," and it's a deal that he thinks still wouldn't be enough.
"It may include Luis Pena in part of that too," he added. "I think they'll get away with not putting Cooper Pratt in, since he's on the major league roster."
Yes, Pratt is on the big-league roster, but so is Lara. What's the difference? For whatever reason, Phillips believes the Brewers can afford to include him in the deal.
All of that said, he still wasn't finished: "If I'm the Tigers, I want [Aaron] Ashby coming back in the deal."
Making sense of the ridiculous trade proposal
Logan Henderson's name has floated around for a potential Skubal trade package, but Phillips eyes the Brewers wins leader instead. Ashby could be moved back to a starting role with the Tigers, but Milwaukee has undoubtedly gotten the most out of him as the "long reliever" that Phillips referred to him as.
For reference, Ashby has recorded just one out in his last three appearances. He's only gone two innings once in the last month and a half. The 28-year-old hasn't thrown more than 2.2 innings in a game this season, so it would be a huge risk to just throw him back into the starting rotation.
Overall, a package of Made, Lara, Pena, and Ashby is absolutely ridiculous. The Brewers would, or at least should, hang up the phone in an instant. Made is untouchable, Lara isn't going anywhere, and Ashby's name came out of right field.
