The Milwaukee Brewers transformed their infield with a midseason swap, but the Tampa Bay Rays struck gold by turning a struggling reliever into a dominant ace.

Tampa Bay Rays ace Drew Rasmussen made his big-league debut in 2020 with the Milwaukee Brewers.

He was a -0.1 WAR pitcher in both 2020 and 2021 with the Brewers, so they gave up on him after 17 appearances out of the bullpen.

The now 31-year-old was turned into a starting pitcher when he joined the Rays. He was a 1.6 WAR player in the back half of the '21 season, along with the entire 2022 season.

Fresh off a career-high 4.7 WAR year, Rasmussen has been on fire and had a case to be named American League Championship Series MVP if not for the contributions of fellow former Brewers ace Freddy Peralta.

Brewers traded Rasmussen in 2021

Rasmussen was part of the Willy Adames deal that saw Milwaukee bring in a shortstop that would give them life.

Obviously, Adames is no longer with the team, but what he did during his few years with the Brewers will never be forgotten.

He's as loved as Peralta, and it'll be interesting to see how loud Peralta's ovation is come Game 2 of the World Series, should he indeed be the Rays starter.

The trade was made on May 21, 2021, and brought Adames and reliever Trevor Richards to Milwaukee for pitchers Rasmussen and JP Feyereisen.

Feyereisen, a Wisconsin native, only made it through the 2022 season with the Rays. Richards, an Illinois native, only had 15 appearances with the Brewers in '21 before he would play for a third team that same season.

The only player still on their respective team in this deal is Rasmussen, and the Rays struck gold with him.

Rasmussen's numbers have been off the charts these past two seasons, and he's proving why he's one of the best pitchers in all of baseball this postseason.

The Washington native appeared in one of the Brewers' two postseason games in 2020, the same year the Tampa Bay Rays would face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, the same Dodgers team that eliminated the Brewers in the Wild Card round.

After posting a 13.50 ERA in one playoff game with the Rays in '21, Rasmussen threw a perfect 1.2 innings in 2022, and he now sports a stellar 1.29 ERA with a 2-0 record this postseason.

Rasmussen has 28 strikeouts in the 25.2 innings he's thrown in his playoff career. For reference, 23 of those have come this season as he has an incredible 7.7 K/BB ratio through 21.0 innings.
