ST. LOUIS – Could the Cardinals be poised to shuffle their infield depth before starting an important six-game road trip against the rival Reds and Brewers?

Puerto Rican baseball legend Carlos Baerga, who played for Cleveland, the Mets, Padres, Red Sox, D-backs and Nationals from 1990-2005, sent out a message on Instagram on Thursday morning congratulating fellow countryman Bryan Torres on his upcoming promotion to the Cardinals. The post has since been deleted, and the club made no move on Thursday before its afternoon game against the Pirates

Torres, 28, went 1 for 4 with two walks in Memphis’ game at Iowa on Tuesday night, but was not in the lineup on Wednesday. If Torres is ultimately promoted, he would be in line to make his MLB debut.

Torres, who has spent 10 seasons in the Minor Leagues over the last 11 years, is certainly deserving of a promotion with how he has swung the bat over the last two seasons with Triple-A Memphis. In 36 gamers with the Triple-A Redbirds this season, the 5-foot-7, 165-pound second baseman has slashed .336/.454/.477/.931 with more walks (29) than strikeouts (25). He has added 10 doubles, a triple, two home runs and 16 RBI.

In 2025, Torres hit .328 with a .441 on-base percentage after walking 70 times and striking out just 57 times. Over his 10-year Minor League career, Torres is a .307 hitter with nearly as many walks (254) as strikeouts (257).

In a stretch of 12 straight games against National League Central Division rivals, the Cardinals play in Cincinnati over the weekend and in Milwaukee early next week. They then return to Busch Stadium to face the rival Cubs May 29-31.

With Masyn Winn missing Tuesday’s game with left knee soreness and Ramon Urias still on the Injured List with an inflamed tendon in his right forearm, the Cardinals could be looking to add more depth on their infield. Nathan Church, who was scratched from Thursday’s lineup with general soreness, is expected to return to Friday’s starting lineup, manager Oliver Marmol said.

Thomas Saggese has played in just 27 games while splitting his playing time between the infield and left field. Saggese, a former Texas League Most Valuable Player, is just 11 for 69 with two doubles and two RBI this season. In an attempt to get him more at bats and consistent playing time, the Cardinals optioned Saggese to Triple-A Memphis on May 4 only to have to recall him a day later when Urias went on the 10-day Injured List.

Cesar Prieto, who was recalled to the big leagues on May 4, has also struggled at the plate in limited opportunities off the bench. He started at shortstop on Tuesday in place of Winn and started at third on Wednesday while Nolan Gorman was in the designated hitter role. Prieto is 0 for 12 so far but has hit into some bad luck of late. Up with the bases loaded in Wednesday’s sixth inning, Prieto drilled a 102.5 mph liner that Pirates right fielder Jake Mangum ran down just in front of the wall.
