The Cardinals surveyed fans as to their likes and dislikes with the team's uniform combinations. Following overwhelming demand from fans, the club is going back to the dark blue hats for road games -- similar to the ones worn by Stan Musial and Albert Pujols years ago.
Back by popular demand, the Cardinals' Navy-colored road hats – similar to the style worn by Stan Musial throughout his Hall of Fame career and Albert Pujols during his first stint in St. Louis – are returning for the rest of the 2026 season.
After years of debate over whether the Cardinals should wear red or blue hats on the road, the organization posed the question to fans online last week. According to the club, “the best fans in baseball have spoken,” and it announced that the team will be wearing their dark blue lids with the interwoven “STL” logo in red and white piping on the front the rest of the 2026 season when playing away from Busch Stadium.
The Cards will wear their dark blue hats this weekend throughout a three-game series at Wrigley Field against the rival Cubs. The Cards will also wear the Navy hats during the five-game series against the Reds in Cincinnati (Aug. 17-20) and the three-gamer in Philadelphia against the Phillies (Aug. 21-23).
The Cardinals’ uniform survey also asked fans for opinions on the club’s home caps, whether the team should wear their “Victory Blue” alternate jerseys at home for select games and on whether they’d like to see a new City Connect uniform. It also had fans rank the five uniforms currently in the Cardinals’ rotation: the home white set, “The Lou” City Connect uniforms, the road gray uniforms, the cream-colored home alternative uniforms and the “Victory Blue” alternatives. No announcements were made as to the results of the survey on those questions.
Cards will primarily wear blue hats on road for '26
The Cardinals wore blue caps for road games in the 1940s, 50s and 60s – a time when it was trendy for teams to have different colored caps to go with their dark road uniforms. After going away from the blue caps for more than two decades, the club brought back the Navy hats and helmets for road games and kept it that way from 1992-2012.
A change was made to the red road hats and helmets from 2013-25, with the exception being when the Cardinals would play against opponents whose primarily color was red. Often, Cardinals’ equipment managers would be required to pack both the red and Navy hats and helmets for road trips when the Cards had stops that saw them facing off against foes such as the Reds, Phillies, Nationals, Dbacks or Angels.
Of course, the Cardinals straddled the red or blue hat debate by switching to a single bird design that featured a blue cap base with a red bill beginning in 1998. As opposed to the regular hat design with the interwoven STL, the alternate hats worn during Sunday home games feature both blue (base) and red (bill).
