Looking to become just the eighth middle-infield, double-play tandem to win Gold Gloves in the same season, St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn and second baseman JJ Wetherholt were named finalists for MLB’s premier defensive honor on Wednesday.

Also, Cardinals right-handed pitcher Michael McGreevy was named a finalist for the National League’s Pitching Gold Glove award. McGreevy’s plus-five Defensive Runs Saved were tied for the most among any starting pitcher in 2026. Atlanta reliever Brent Suter led all MLB pitchers with plus-seven DRS.

The winners of the Gold Gloves will be announced on Nov. 1. In the voting for the Gold Glove awards, the 30 MLB managers and up to six coaches from each team vote on a pool of players in their specific league, excluding players from their own team. Those votes make up 75 percent of the selection totals, with the other 25 percent coming from the SABR Defensive Index.

Winn, the National League’s Gold Glove winner at shortstop in 2025, is hoping to repeat the feat in 2026 after leading all NL shortstops in Outs Above Average at plus-19. Winn had a plus-21 Outs Above Average rating in 2025 when he won his first Rawlings Gold Glove.

Wetherholt, 23, was solid at the plate in his first MLB season, but he was even better defensively. His 25 Outs Above Average were the most ever recorded by a rookie since the creation of the defensive metric in 2016, and that total ranked second in all baseball behind Cubs star centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong’s 26 Outs Above Average.

Wetherholt earned a Fielding Run Value of 23 (100th percentile) and he garnered a 25 rating in terms of fielding range (100th percentile), per Baseball Savant.

Wetherholt could be poised to join Brendan Donovan (2022) as the only rookies in the storied history of the Cardinals to win a Gold Glove. Wetherholt’s top competition for the Gold Glove is Milwaukee blossom star Brice Turang, who had a plus-16 rating in terms of Outs Above Average. Turang won the NL’s Gold Glove at second base in 2024, and MLB’s Platinum Glove that same season.

Pittsburgh’s Brandon Lowe, the other finalist at second base, had a plus-15 rating in Outs Above Average with 15. He was credited with 11 Runs Prevented, while Turang had 12 Runs Prevented – both trailing the 19 Runs Prevented Wetherholt was credited for in his rookie season.

Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson and Arizona’s Geraldo Perdomo were also named finalists at shortstop along with Winn. Swanson won Gold Gloves in 2022 and 2023 – the first one with a member of the Braves and the second one with the Cubs. Perdomo, who set new career highs in Outs Above Average (plus-16) and Fielding Run Value (plus-13), is a Gold Glove finalist for the first time.

As for Winn, his Fielding Run Value was a plus-17 and his fielding range was assigned a plus-19 rating – both numbers ranking in MLB’s 99th percentile. Also, his arm strength was at 94.4 mph on his throws across the diamond – tops among all MLB middle infielders.

McGreevy was named an NL finalist along with Atlanta’s Chris Sale and Mets’ right-handed rookie Nolan McLean.
