Rookie left-hander Brycen Mautz was scheduled to make his MLB debut with the Cardinals on Sunday before rains washed out the game. Now, the Cardinals must decide whether to demote him immediately or have him face the Brewers.

Heavy rains in the Cincinnati area washed out Sunday's series finale between the Cardinals and Reds. It was the second time in what was supposed to be a three-game series that weather impacted a game.

Friday's game was pushed to Saturday, when the two teams played 20 innings and split a day/night doubleheader. The Cardinals won Game 1 8-2 behind the stirring MLB debut for infielder/outfielder Bryan Torres. In Game 2, Jordan Walker hit his 15th homer and tied the game with another hit with two outs in the ninth, but the Reds eventually won 7-6 in 11 innings.

Sunday's game will be made up on Aug. 17 as part of a day/night doubleheader in Cincinnati. That takes what was going to be a four-game series and turns it into a five-game series at Great American Ball Park.

The Cardinals announced late Saturday night that left-handed pitcher Brycen Mautz was being promoted from Triple-A Memphis to the Cardinals to take Sunday's start. There is now a chance that Mautz will return to Triple-A without making his MLB debut.

The 6-foot-3 Mautz was a second-round pick out of the University of San Diego by the Cardinals in the 2022 MLB Draft. After steadily working his way through the system, he went 8-3 with a 2.98 in 2025 while helping Double-A Springfield win the Texas League title.

This season, Mautz is 0-2 with a 2.90 ERA over nine starts with Triple-A Memphis. Over 40 1/3 innings of work, he has struck out 43 batters, while walking 24. Triple-A hitters have four homers off Mautz, but they have hit just .209 against him on the season.

What to do with Brycen Mautz?

The Cardinals are scheduled to face the Brewers in Milwaukee on Monday at 1:10 PM CT. It is the start of a three-game series against the surging Brewers. Matthew Liberatore, Michael McGreevy and Dustin May are scheduled to face the Brewers.

St. Louis and Milwaukee split a series at Busch Stadium 1-1 with the middle game in the series being rained out. It will be made up in July when the Brewers return to Busch Stadium, and that four-game series will now become a five-game series that could have major implications on how the Cardinals approach the MLB Trade Deadline at the end of the month.

The Cardinals could keep Mautz up on the big-league squad and pitch him in long relief or have him make one of the starts against the Brewers. A start on Friday against the Cubs -- following Thursday's scheduled off day -- is also an option for the Redbirds.

The Cardinals return to Busch Stadium on Friday to face the rival Cubs for the first time this season. Chicago came into Sunday riding a seven-game losing streak and they placed right-handed pitched Edward Cabrera on the 15-day Injured List because of repeated issues with blisters.
