Welcome to the wacky and wonderful world of Minor League Baseball.
The Palm Beach Cardinals, the Single-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, announced their first-ever alternate identity recently. For 12 Saturday night home games this summer, the Cardinals will be known as the Palm Beach Frozen Iguanas.
Iguanas are part of the landscape near the Cardinals’ home park, Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter, Fla.
And Saturday, at the club’s Fan Fest at the stadium, Cardinals fans will get to check out the Frozen Iguanas’ logo and such. The event is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A news release from the Palm Beach club gave those of us who don’t know much about the reptile a lesson.
“Iguanas are just a part of the views in Jupiter,” per the news release. “In trees, on golf courses, in your backyard…you name it, they’re probably there. These cold-blooded reptiles thrive in the summer heat, but as the temperature goes down, so do the iguanas. When the temperature hits below 50 degrees, iguanas can often be seen in a dormant ‘frozen’ state and even fall out of trees. But don’t worry! The iguanas remain unharmed and spring back to life when the sun comes out.”
Who knew? (This doesn’t happen in St. Louis.)
In a completely logical marketing partnership, the team is pairing with Iggy Trap for the promotion. Iggy Trap is a local provider of what the Cardinals called “safe, humane, and eco-friendly removal” of iguanas.
The team released a variety of alternate logos and, as expected, they stray far from the traditional redbird of the Cardinals and the red-and-white scheme of the parent club.
Instead, the icy blues and greens of the Frozen Iguanas’ jerseys and hats scream chilly temps, which certainly would be welcomed by many in the humid South Florida summer.
The Cardinals have developed what they call the Ice-Cold 12 Pack, a package that includes tickets to all 12 Iguanas games, access to exclusive events and discounts.
They are planning a summer of iguana fun, apparently. Alternate identities are rare in the Florida State League, and it will interesting to see if other teams give a nod to their local communities in the same way in 2027.
