Rainiel Rodriguez, the top-ranked prospect in the Cardinals' Minor League system, hit two more home runs on Sunday to wrap up the Texas League Player of the Week award. Rodriguez, 19, is hitting .324 with a .972 OPS, 17 homers, 21 doubles and 51 RBI for Double-A Springfield.
Already the second youngest every-day position player in Double-A, Cardinals' top prospect Rainiel Rodriguez could be pushing his way to Triple-A Memphis soon with the way he is surging at the plate over the last month.
Rodriguez, 19, was named the Texas League Player of the Week on Monday after racking up 14 hits, 26 total bases, three doubles, three home runs and nine RBI in Double-A Springfield’s six-game sweep of Arkansas. He had two four-hit games and a three-hit night during the one-sided road series in Arkansas.
The No. 1 prospect in the Cardinals system and No. 18 overall in MLB is hitting a staggering .456 with a 1.348 OPS in 16 games in August. The catcher/first baseman has added to his special month by hitting six homers, doubling 10 times and driving in 17 runs in August. Since being called up from High-A Peoria, Rodriguez has hit .324 with a .972 OPS, 21 doubles, 17 homers and 51 RBI in 72 games.
How special is what Rodriguez has done at the raw age of 19? Since 2006, only six players have hit at least 15 home runs at the Double-A level as a teenager – Yankees oft-injured slugger Giancarlo Stanton, Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr., Brewers do-everything outfielder Jackson Chourio, Orioles rookie catcher Samuel Basallo, No. 2-ranked prospect Leo De Vries (Athletics) and the Cardinals’ Rodriguez, per MLB Pipeline's Jesse Borek.
Springfield, Texas League champs in 2025 with MLB slugger Joshua Báez leading the way struggled over the first half of this season (31-37), but they have been dominant since the arrivals of Jesus Báez, Josiah Ragsdale, Tanner Franklin, Daniel Eagan, Sando Santana and Rodriguez. Springfield is 33-18 in the second half and four games ahead of first-half winner Tulsa (Dodgers).
Springfield has three six-game series remaining before the start of the Texas League playoffs. Triple-A Memphis, first-half champs in the International League, has four six-game series remaining before it starts its playoffs Sept. 22-24.
Rodriguez and Báez have formed quite the one-two punch since being promoted to Double-A Springfield earlier this season. Báez, 21, was acquired from the Mets in a trade that centered around former All-Star closer Ryan Helsley last July. The middle infielder, who is ranked as the No. 15 prospect in the Cards system, per MLB Pipeline, has hit 20 homers and added five doubles and 50 RBI in just 43 games at the Double-A level. He is batting .292 with a robust .999 OPS.
Rodriguez and Báez took turns battering Arkansas on Sunday. They went back-to-back with homers two different times – in the fourth and sixth innings – and Báez added a third homer in the ninth inning of the 11-4 rout. Rodriguez was 4 for 4 with three runs, three RBI and two homers, while Báez was 4 for 5 with three runs, five RBI and three homers.
Like Rodriguez, Báez has heated up in August, a month where he has hit .338 with eight homers and 22 RBI for Springfield this month. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder had a stretch in late July and early August where he homered in seven of nine games and Sunday’s three-homer day was his second multi-homer game of 2026.
