After trading Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, Nolan Arenado and Brendan Donovan already this offseason, it's very evident that the St. Louis Cardinals are in a full rebuild.
But after acquiring so many prospects in these trades, the hope is that the rebuild will not last long and the team can get back into contention in relatively short order.
St. Louis has had losing seasons in two of the last three years and hasn't made the playoffs since 2022.
Despite the heavy lifting already done, there could still be more moves on the way for Chaim Bloom and Co., either before the start of the regular season or at the trade deadline.
In fact, on Feb. 5th's edition of 'Cardinal Territory,' former Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn predicted that both JoJo Romero and Lars Nootbaar will be dealt at some point.
He reiterated that again on Monday's episode, saying it makes sense to move Romero now especially given now volatile relievers and relief markets are.
"If you're doing this whole thing, I would say you should trade him because of how relievers can go 'one year great, one year bad.' If you look at it that way, you're running a risk of if you're going to trade him at the deadline, or that's the thought, or he's going to be a free agent, then you get no value for him if he has a bad little stretch."
Now 29 years old, Romero is a California native who played his college ball at Nevada and Yavapai College. He was a fourth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2016 and made his major league debut with Philadelphia in 2021. Acquired by the Cardinals in 2022, he's gone 15-11 lifetime with a 3.55 ERA.
He appeared in 65 games last season for St. Louis, striking out 55 over 61.0 innings. This is the final year of his contract. He's had back-to-back seasons of 65 appearances each.
Now 28 years old, Nootbaar is under team control for two more seasons. A career .242 hitter, he had 13 homers a season ago.
He certainly might be a desirable trade piece but after double heel surgery in the offseason, the Cardinals are likely best served to see if has a solid first half before potentially moving him. It's unclear at this point if he'll be ready for Opening Day, which would further suppress his trade market and trade value.
