Infielder Thomas Saggese has been the Cardinals hottest hitter of late, hitting 15 of 29 (.517) with three homers, three doubles, eight RBI and two stolen bases in his last nine games. Has he done enough to stick on the roster when Masyn Winn and JJ Wetherholt return?

How much can a nine-game stretch change the perception of a player during an arduous 162-game season?

Cardinals’ infielder Thomas Saggese is hopeful that his sterling stretch of late definitely changes the course of his career and shows that he belongs in the big leagues on a full-time basis going forward.

Saggese, who was recalled from Triple-A Memphis when second baseman/shortstop JJ Wetherholt (right wrist tendinitis) was placed on the 10-day Injured List, has been the Cardinals hottest hitter of late. In his nine games, he’s gone 15 of 29 (.517) with three homers, three doubles, eight RBI and two stolen bases.

Also, Saggese extended his career-best hitting streak to eight games on Monday night when the Cardinals lost to the Giants 5-4 in 11 innings. He has posted six multi-hit games, he’s scored 11 runs and he doubled in three straight games at one point during this recent hot stretch.

Then, there was last Tuesday’s game at Dodger Stadium when Saggese blasted two home runs with his father, Tom, in the stands watching. Saggese, 24, also tapped the “Love You More” bands around his wrists upon crossing home plate as a nod to his late mother, Wendi, who used to use that phrase with him.

“You get the first at bat, it’s Dodger Stadium and I’m kind of jittery and I’m kind of close to home (in Carlsbad, Calif.), but then to hit a homer it was like, ‘Woah, pretty cool!’” Saggese told Cardinals TV last week. “But then to get two (home runs), that’s pretty special.”

Contrast Saggese’s success of late with how his 2026 season started and it’s easy to see why he is hoping this will be the lasting impression of him left on the Cardinals front office. Stuck in a role where he only got sporadic playing time and often failed to produce when he did get opportunities, Saggese hit just .180 in April (11 of 50) and .158 in May (3 for 19) and was optioned to Triple-A Memphis in early June. Most damning for the former Most Valuable Player of the Double-A Texas League was that teammates Nathan Church, Jose Fermin and Ramon Urias passed him up for spots in the regular rotation and leading to his demotion.

At the time of his demotion, the Cardinals stressed to Saggese the need for him to be more patient at the plate and limit the times he swings at pitches out of the strike zone. His work there has helped him boost his walk rate from 5.4 percent to 8.5 percent. Also, he said he feels far more prepared at the plate after studying pitchers more carefully – both on his own and alongside hitting coach Brant Bown.

“For me, it’s been about going over the opposing pitchers and trying to decipher what this guy wants to do to me and what I’m going to look for,” said Saggese, who had a key infield single in Monday’s ninth inning that helped the Cardinals tie the game and force extra innings. “It helps when you have a (hitting coach) like Brant Brown who is so detailed and he knows so much about opposing pitchers … I do my own homework too, but it’s easy to listen to (Brown) when he says, ‘Look for this, this and this and look for him away,’ and then go from there.”

Masyn Winn, who has been on the Injured List since Aug. 25 with a fractured left thumb, has resumed taking batting practice and could be close to a return to every-day duty at shortstop. Also, the Cardinals hope that Weatherholt can return – and return to second base – not long after the club returns to Busch Stadium on Sept. 11 for a nine-game homestand.

What happens then to Saggese remains to be seen, but he likely has earned a place on the Cardinals roster the rest of 2026 with the hot streak that just might have altered his perception within in the franchise.
