Sports radio icon and FOX Sports Radio host Colin Cowherd took a seemingly unnecessary shot at the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday's show.
Cowherd was arguing for why the Los Angeles Dodgers are good for baseball, and in doing so, said the real baseball villains are the bad teams that surround the Dodgers like the A's, Marlins, Pirates, White Sox and Cardinals.
Cowherd has always been a proponent of dynasties so it's no surprise that he likes the Dodgers, but his insult of the Cardinals seems out of place, especially when you compare the Cardinals to those other teams he mentioned.
Let's dive in:
In the last 20 years, the Cardinals have been one of the more successful franchises in the sport. Since 2006, the Cardinals have been to the playoffs 11 times and they've won two World Series titles (2006, 2011). They've also been to the World Series an additional time (2013). They've had only three losing seasons (2007, 2023, 2025).
While two of the last three years have admittedly been rough, St. Louis has generally been a pillar of stability. They are hardly the biggest problem in the sport.
The Marlins have made the playoffs twice since 2003 and haven't won a playoff game since then.
Cowherd has always loved stars and he gravitates to big names. Sure, maybe the Cardinals stars have been more subtle, but between Albert Pujols, Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright, there's a chance that the Cardinals get five Hall of Famers out of the group that has made up most of the last 20 years.
Pujols was a generational player who hit more than 700 home runs in his career. He elevated the sport plenty during his time in the organization.
No, the Cardinals are not the Dodgers when it comes to spending money, but they have spent on players, even in the last five years. They signed Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray, and they acquired Arenado and Goldschmidt before that.
No one can accuse the Cardinals of not trying to win. The other teams Cowherd listed? They are guilty of that.
Colin Cowherd at a UFC event in 2024. Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn ImagesCowherd once praised the Arizona Cardinals for moving off Josh Rosen after one season at quarterback. He constantly praises teams who have self-awareness and who aren't afraid to pivot.
Isn't that exactly what the Cardinals are doing? They recognized that they had an aging and expensive roster, moved off pieces and acquired younger prospects, including ones who are close to major league ready. And they are gearing up for the next successful run.
That is the textbook definition of what Cowherd usually loves, so we ask again?
Why take a shot at the Cardinals?
