According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the St. Louis Cardinals have hired future Hall of Famer Yadier Molina to a prominent role within the organization.
Future Hall of Fame catcher Yadier Molina is hired by the St. Louis Cardinals to be special assistant to Chaim Bloom, president of baseball operations.
It's unclear what exactly he'll do for the Cardinals, but the fact that he's in the organization in an official capacity is certainly noteworthy. Molina has been managing in winter leagues and will serve as the manager for Team Puerto Rico at the upcoming World Baseball Classic. He has aspirations of being a big-league manager and spent a few games in the dugout for the Cardinals at the end of 2025.
One of the most revered Cardinals players of the last quarter century, Molina spent 19 years with the St. Louis organization. He was the ultimate winner, helping the team to two World Series titles. He also earned 10 All-Star selections, nine Gold Glove Awards, four Platinum Gloves and two Silver Sluggers.
He paired with the likes of Albert Pujols and Adam Wainwright to make up a special era of team history. The group won the World Series in both 2006 and 2011. Molina also helped the Cardinals get to the World Series in 2013, where they were beaten by the Boston Red Sox.
A career .277 hitter, Molina hit 176 home runs and drove in 1,022 runs. Molina retired after the 2022 season, meaning he will be eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2028.
There's no way of telling for sure, but the assumption is that Molina will help the Cardinals advance the organization right now. Perhaps that means he'll meet with prospective free agents, be a sounding board for players in the organization and visit minor leaguers.
It's also likely that he'll learn more about how the organization works from the inside-out so that he can use that knowledge to help further his case to become a manager in the future. Molina is just 43 years old still.
St. Louis earned high marks on Wednesday as Baseball America gave them four prospects in its first Top 100 of the season. JJ Wetherholt (No. 3) and Joshua Baez (No. 54) bookend the rankings, while you can click here to see about Liam Doyle and Rainer Rodriguez.
