As we move within three weeks of Opening Day, the St. Louis Cardinals are trimming their major league spring training roster down.
As noted by Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, the Cardinals have sent a trio of top prospects down to Triple-A. Leonardo Bernal, Jimmy Crooks and Tink Hence, who are all part of the team's Top 15 prospects (per MLB Pipeline) were all sent down. Skyler Hales is going to minor league camp.
Jones believes this means catcher Yohel Pozo will make the roster.
Here's more on the top prospects:
Despite being sent down, the switch-hitting catcher is expected to make his major league debut at some point in 2026.
He spent the whole year at Double-A Springfield in 2025, hitting .247 with a .332 on-base percentage. He had 13 home runs, 70 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.
He also won a Minor League Gold Glove.
He's the No. 6 prospect in the organization, according to MLB Pipeline and is currently representing Team Panama at the World Baseball Classic.
Now 24-years-old and also a catcher, he was a fourth-round pick of the Cardinals in 2022 out of Oklahoma. He's made his debut already, hitting .133 in 15 games in 2025, so he's expected to be a bigger contributor in 2026 at some point.
He hit .274 in 98 games for Triple-A Memphis in 2025, blasting 14 homers and driving in 79. He's ranked as the No. 8 prospect in the organization.
Ranked as the No. 15 prospect in the organization, Hence made just eight appearances in 2025, going 0-1 with a 2.95 ERA. He struck out 24 batters in 21.1 innings. The 23-year-old was drafted No. 63 overall in 2020 and dealt with lat and shoulder issues much of the last campaign.
Reports indicate he could eventually transition into being a reliever.
St. Louis Cardinals catcher Leonardo Bernal (13) hits a single in the second inning against the New York Mets at Clover Park. Jim Rassol-Imagn Images--Speaking of prospects, the Cardinals, were given a healthy grade from MLB Pipeline for the overall totality of the farm system. After solid returns in trades for Brendan Donovan, Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray, the Cardinals now have the No. 4-ranked system in the sport. That doesn't necessarily help fans feel better about the team's organizational rebuild, but it does provide some optimism for the future.
--Kyle Leahy threw four brilliant innings for the Cardinals on Saturday against the New York Mets, strengthening his case for an Opening Day starting rotation spot.
