St. Louis Cardinals standouts Masyn Winn and JJ Wetherholt will be trying to become the 13th middle infield duo in MLB history to win Gold Gloves in the same season. If Winn can repeat at shortstop and Wetherholt can win at second base, it would be the 25th time a double play combo won Gold Gloves.
Already MLB’s all-time leader in Gold Glove awards by a wide margin, the St. Louis Cardinals could be poised to add to their impressive list of 100 wins for top defensive honors tonight when the winners are announced on ESPN.
ESPN's Rawlings Gold Glove awards show is set to air at 7:30 PM CT/8:30 PM ET tonight.
Shortstop Masyn Winn, standout rookie second baseman JJ Wetherholt and pitcher Michael McGreevy are Gold Glove finalists at their respective positions in the National League. Winn and Wetherholt will be trying to become the 13th middle infield duo to sweep the Gold Glove awards from the same team. The previous 12 duos have done it 24 times previously with Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson and second baseman Nico Hoerner being the last to do so in 2023. Edgar Renteria and Fernando Vina are the only Cardinals middle infielders to sweep the Gold Glove awards in the same season, doing so in 2002.
Wetherholt set a rookie record for Outs Above Average in his first MLB season with 25 – one short of MLB leader Pete Crow-Armstrong, the star center fielder of the Chicago Cubs. Wetherholt, 23, is trying to join Brendan Donovan (2022 as a Utility Fielder) as the only rookies in the storied history of the Cardinals to capture Gold Glove awards.
Winn won his first Gold Glove award in 2025 when he committed just three errors at shortstop, tying an MLB mark set by Cal Ripken (1990) and Omar Vizquel (2000). Winn led all NL shortstops in Outs Above Average with 19 – far more than fellow finalists Geraldo Perdomo (12) and Swanson (12).
McGreevy’s plus-five Defensive Runs Saved were tied for the most among any MLB pitcher in 2026. He is a finalist along with Braves veteran Chris Sale and Mets rookie Nolan McLean.
The Cardinals’ 100 Gold Gloves are 15 more than MLB’s next-closest team, the Atlanta Braves. The Cardinals are also the only team to win five Gold Glove awards in one season, with first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, second baseman Tommy Edman, third baseman Nolan Arenado, left fielder Tyler O'Neill and center fielder Harrison Bader winning top defensive honors in 2021.
The Baltimore Orioles, led by the defensive greatness of Brooks Robinson and Ripken in the past, are the all-time leaders in the AL with 75 Gold Gloves.
