A St. Louis Cardinals franchise with an MLB record 100 Gold Glove awards was somewhat shockingly shut out of the top defensive honors on Sunday night, even though they had three finalists and two favorites to win the awards.
Shortstop Masyn Winn, standout rookie second baseman JJ Wetherholt and pitcher Michael McGreevy all failed in their bids to win top defensive honors. Winn, who won the National League’s Gold Glove at shortstop in 2025, led all NL shortstops in Outs Above Average and Defensive Runs Saved, but he lost out to Arizona’s Geraldo Perdomo.
Wetherholt, who recorded the most Outs Above Average by any rookie since the defensive metric was created in 2016, lost out to Milwaukee’s Brice Turang, who snagged his second Gold Glove award in the past three seasons. While Wetherholt bested Turang in Outs Above Average (25-19), it was the Milwaukee second baseman who had the edge in Defensive Runs Saved (23-12).
Winn and Wetherholt were hoping to become just the 13th MLB middle infield teammates to sweep the Gold Glove awards in the same season. When they came up short, it meant that the Cubs duo of Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson are still the last middle infield teammates to sweep the awards in the same season. Edgar Renteria and Fernando Vina are the only middle infielders to sweep the awards in Cardinals’ history, doing so in 2002.
Wetherholt failed to become just the second rookie in the storied history of the Cardinals to win a Gold Glove. Brendan Donovan, who won the first-ever Utility Gold Glove award, nabbed the top defensive honor as a rookie in 2022.
McGreevy, who finished tied for first in Defensive Runs Saved (plus-five) among starting pitchers, lost out on the Gold Glove award to Mets rookie Nolan McLean. McGreevy committed just one error in 41 chances and helped to start four double plays, while McLean committed three errors and started just two double plays in 43 defensive chances.
Winn ranked in MLB’s 99th percentile in Fielding Run Value (and first among NL shortstops) and range and 96th in arm strength. He averaged 94.4 mph on his throws across the diamond, the hardest of any middle infielder in MLB.
The No. 1-ranked prospect in the Cardinals Minor League system since he was selected No. 7 in the 2024 MLB Draft, Wetherholt showed what all the hype was about as a rookie. As good as he was while hitting 17 homers and 15 doubles and stealing 14 bases, he was even better defensively. In 1,101 1/3 innings at second base, Wetherholt handled 533 total chances, participated in 76 double plays and committed just two errors. He added another 96 2/3 innings at shortstop while Winn missed time with a fractured left thumb, and Wetherholt handled his 36 chances flawlessly without an error.
