Nine Cubs pitchers are sidelined. Discover who's out, their injury timelines, and the potential return dates for these key arms.

The Chicago Cubs have dealt with their fair share of injuries in the early going.

Although most of the position players have stayed relatively healthy (outside of Seiya Suzuki), it feels like the Cubs continue to lose quality arms. Most of the team’s injuries have come from the pitching staff.

The North Siders currently have nine pitchers on the injured list at this point in the season. That doesn’t even include Matthew Boyd, who recently came back from a left bicep strain earlier this week.

Here’s a quick look at which Cubs pitchers are on the injured list right now and when they might be back.

Cade Horton

Cade Horton will not return this season after undergoing season-ending elbow surgery last week. Horton opted for Tommy John surgery, which means he will be out for the remainder of the 2026 campaign and a large part of the 2027 season.

Justin Steele

Justin Steele is currently on the 60-day IL as he continues to ramp up from last year’s elbow surgery. While there hasn’t been much news on Steele’s recovery progress, he is expected to make his season debut sometime in late May/early June.

Daniel Palencia

Daniel Palencia unexpectedly went on the 15-day IL last week due to a left lat strain. However, he is not expected to miss much time. The Cubs expect the hard-throwing right-hander to return within the next two weeks.

Phil Maton

Phil Maton landed on the 15-day IL back on April 10 due to a right knee issue. He is making good progress in his recovery and recently threw one scoreless inning for Triple-A Iowa. Maton should be back sometime next week.

Hunter Harvey

Hunter Harvey landed on the 15-day IL on April 12 due to right triceps inflammation. He is still a ways away from returning, but Cubs insider Bruce Levine recently reported that Harvey threw for the first time on Wednesday. He could be back in the next few weeks.

Caleb Thielbar

Caleb Thielbar is the latest Cubs reliever to land on the injured list. He left his most recent relief appearance early on Thursday after injuring his hamstring in the ninth inning. It’s still too early to predict when Thielbar will be back.

Porter Hodge

Porter Hodge will not return this season after undergoing season-ending elbow surgery earlier this week.

Jordan Wicks

Jordan Wicks is continuing to build up after missing most of Spring Training due to a left forearm injury. He has thrown 5 ⅔ shutout innings with four strikeouts in his first two rehab assignment starts with Triple-A Iowa.

Ethan Roberts

Ethan Roberts landed on the 15-day IL after a vent landed on him and cut open his middle finger. But Roberts isn’t expected to miss a lot of time. He recently threw a bullpen session (according to MLB.com).
