Draft picks and trade deadline shuffles overhaul the North Side’s farm system as Josiah Hartshorn cements his dominance and fresh arms challenge the organizational rankings.

MLB Pipeline has finally updated the Chicago Cubs’ top prospect list.

This was the biggest MLB Pipeline prospect update of the season. This new list includes the Cubs’ 2026 draftees, and there was a major shakeup in the top-10 after the front office traded away multiple prospects at this year’s trade deadline.

There was a lot of movement for the Cubs on this list. There were some risers, some fallers, and some newcomers on this new prospect update post the trade deadline. Let’s take a look at how the top-10 shakes out for the North Siders.

No. 1 prospect: Josiah Hartshorn

Josiah Hartshorn remains the Cubs’ top prospect in the system. The switch-hitting outfielder has been unreal at the plate in his first professional season. He dominated at Single-A Myrtle Beach to begin the year and has continued that dominance at High-A South Bend over the past few months.

Hartshorn is slashing .282/.403/.515 with 17 home runs, 19 doubles, five triples, 90 RBI, and nine stolen bases across 95 combined games at Single-A and High-A this season. He’s making hard contact, driving the ball, and not striking out a ton. The 19-year-old has a .411 wOBA, 133 wRC+, .263 ISO, and a .940 OPS across 56 games at High-A.

Hartshorn definitely looks the part and is much deserving of being the Cubs’ top prospect. He is the only prospect in the organization to be on MLB Pipeline’s top-100 list after Chicago dealt Jefferson Rojas at the deadline. Hartshorn comes in at No. 60 overall.

Newcomers: Cade Townsend, Caden Sorrell, Myles Bailey

The Cubs’ top three picks in the 2026 MLB Draft are all ranked inside the top-10 in their farm system. Cade Townsend (first-round) debuts at No. 4, Caden Sorrell (second-round) comes in at No. 7, and Myles Bailey (second-round comp pick) checks in at No. 8 overall.

Townsend’s No. 4 spot immediately makes him the Cubs’ top pitching prospect in the organization. The front office took him with the 23rd overall pick after a solid final college season at Mississippi. The right-hander posted a 3.94 ERA and 88 strikeouts across 64 innings pitched.

Sorrell and Bailey also find themselves inside the top-10. Sorrell recently made his professional debut with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. He has gone 2-for-7 with one stolen base and one strikeout to begin his career. Bailey is still working his way back from an ankle injury he suffered at Florida State this spring.

Faller: Jaxon Wiggins

It feels like in every one of these updates that Jaxon Wiggins continues to fall lower and lower. He entered the season as the Cubs’ No. 2 prospect and the No. 58 overall prospect in all of baseball on MLB Pipeline.

Wiggins has now dropped to No. 6 in the Cubs’ system, is no longer the top pitching prospect in the organization, and there are huge question marks surrounding him right now. Since returning from the injured list on July 10, the 24-year-old right-hander has allowed 19 runs over his last 14 innings pitched with the Iowa Cubs.

Things do not look great for Wiggins right now. He has really struggled at the Triple-A level this year, and a 2026 MLB debut doesn’t seem realistic anymore. It might be time to have a serious conversation with Wiggins about his future role.
