Chicago’s high-contact infielder brings elite bat-to-ball skills and speed to Wrigley Field following a breakout Triple-A campaign, offering a dynamic profile reminiscent of star veteran Nico Hoerner.

The Chicago Cubs are calling up one of their top prospects.

The Cubs’ No. 7 prospect James Triantos is getting the call. The 23-year-old has slowly moved up the Minor League ranks since being drafted in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He is now reportedly headed to the big leagues.

Geoff Pontes of Baseball America reported early on Thursday morning that Triantos will be getting the call. Other insiders then confirmed the report, and Triantos himself later confirmed he would be called up by reposting the announcement on his Instagram story.

Triantos has been in the Cubs’ organization since they drafted him as an 18-year-old high schooler back in 2021. He started at the rookie ball level to end the 2021 campaign and eventually worked his way up to Triple-A.

Triantos has displayed consistency at the plate at each of his Minor League stops. He hit .272 with seven home runs and 20 stolen bases at Single-A in 2022, had a .287 batting average with 16 stolen bases at High-A and Double-A in 2023, batted .300 with 47 stolen bases at Double-A and Triple-A in 2024, and had a .258 batting average with seven home runs and 28 stolen bases with the Iowa Cubs in 2025.

This year, the 23-year-old is having his best all-around campaign. He’s slashing .306/.344/.440 with seven home runs, 24 doubles, 52 RBI, and 18 stolen bases across 88 games with the Iowa Cubs.

For those unfamiliar with Triantos’ game, he has extremely similar characteristics to current Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner. Both thrive on making contact, don’t boast a lot of power, won’t strike out a ton, and are a threat on the basepaths.

This season at Triple-A, Triantos has a 93rd percentile expected batting average (.294), 91st percentile strikeout rate (11.8%), 91st percentile whiff rate (15.3%), 87th percentile zone contact rate (90.4%), and a 74th percentile speed. The Cubs’ No. 7 prospect thrives on making contact to all areas of the field.

Cubs fans shouldn’t expect much power from Triantos. The young prospect has never hit more than seven home runs in a Minor League season and has a career 2.9% barrel rate at Triple-A. He’s very much a contact hitter who doesn’t barrel the ball much.

The corresponding move for Triantos has yet to be announced, but this move could be for either Kevin Alcantara or Pedro Ramírez.

Alcantara hasn’t really shown much since being called up again in late June. He has only started four games since that date and has a .200 batting average on the season. With Triantos having some outfield experience, the Cubs can make this switch seamlessly.

There is a chance, though, that Ramirez is the corresponding move after taking an uncomfortable swing on Monday night. Although he did finish that game and came off the bench as a pinch hitter on Tuesday, the 22-year-old could be dealing with some type of injury.

The corresponding move should be announced before Friday’s series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
