Major League Baseball announced the finalists for the Gold Glove Award at each position on Wednesday afternoon. Each position has three finalists that managers and coaches will vote for to determine who the best defenders were at each position in the National League and American League throughout the 2025 season.
To no one’s surprise, the Cubs have the most Gold Glove finalists in the NL. Carson Kelly (catcher), Nico Hoerner (second base), Matt Shaw (third base), Ian Happ (left field), Pete Crow-Armstrong (center field), and Matthew Boyd (pitcher) are all in the running to win this prestigious award at their respective position.
Happ is looking to win his fourth straight Gold Glove, while Hoerner is attempting to win this award for the second time in three years. The other four Cubs finalists (Kelly, Shaw, Crow-Armstrong, and Boyd) would all be first-time winners if they were to win.
It’s nice to see several players on this team being recognized for their defensive efforts, especially since Chicago had arguably the best defense in baseball this year. The Cubs ranked second in team defensive runs saved (according to Fielding Bible), and each position but right field finished with at least four defensive runs saved.
The Cubs were literally everywhere defensively, and fans could make a case for each of those finalists to win the Gold Glove Award. However, Crow-Armstrong, Hoerner, and Happ all feel like locks to win the award at their respective positions.
Crow-Armstrong led all of baseball with 24 Outs Above Average, 19 five-star catches, and 22 Runs Prevented. Hoerner led all second basemen in defensive WAR (2.2), and Happ ranked higher in most defensive metrics than Kyle Stowers and Tommy Pham -- the two other left field finalists in the NL.
As for Kelly, Shaw, and Boyd, each of them faces some steep competition to win the award. Kelly will have to beat out Patrick Bailey, who ranked first in Fielding Run Value. Shaw will have to beat out Ke’Bryan Hayes, and his third-base leading 21 Outs Above Average, and Logan Webb’s +7 defensive runs saved led all NL pitchers in 2025.
The Cubs have six Gold Glove finalists this year, tied with the Toronto Blue Jays for the most in the Majors. One surprising player who was not a finalist for this award was Dansby Swanson.
Swanson was a finalist for the Gold Glove Award in three straight seasons from 2022 to 2024, which included winning two Gold Gloves in 2022 and 2023. However, he was not a part of this year’s finalists at shortstop. St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn, Atlanta Braves shortstop Nick Allen, and Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts are the NL finalists at that position.
The winners of the Gold Glove Award will be announced on Sunday, November 2nd.
