It wasn't a happy time for the Arizona Diamondbacks in their opening series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
Birthday boy Will Smith, who also had a Will Smith Bobblehead Night, smoked a two-run home run late to help the Dodgers win 3-2. That also wrapped up an opening three-game series sweep by the Dodgers, too.
The Diamondbacks are going to lick their wounds, so to speak, and take Sunday off. It's a very rare Sunday off, something that might not happen again in the 2026 MLB season.
But it's probably a good thing as D-backs manager Torey Lovullo can sit back and wonder what went wrong in Los Angeles.
During Saturday's game, D-backs second baseman Ketel Marte and Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman had a humorous moment. Freeman was trying to advance to second on a groundball, but Marte fielded it cleanly.
As Freeman was trying to get to second base, there was no way around Marte. At one point, Marte motioned toward Freeman to come forward a little further. Marte actually wanted to give Freeman a hug. And they did it! It was a moment that went viral on social media, plus showed how two wily veterans can have a funny moment.
After taking Sunday off, the D-backs open their 2026 home schedule on Monday. They'll welcome the Detroit Tigers to Chase Field in Phoenix
