The Arizona Diamondbacks were keeping it tight against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on Friday night. But the Dodgers' key free agent acquisitions ended up playing big roles in a Dodgers 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
With the score tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, outfielder Kyle Tucker's RBI single to right scored the go-ahead run.
Then, reliever Edwin Díaz came on and picked up his first save this season.
In the top of the second inning, the Dbacks took a 1-0 lead. Alek Thomas doubled to right and Gabriel Moreno scored. But Pavin Smith was thrown out at home plate by Tucker, whose throw was relayed from second baseman Alex Freeland to catcher Will Smith.
Ketel Marte hit his first home run this season, a solo blast to right field. That gave the Dbacks a 2-0 lead over the Dodgers.
In the bottom of the third, Freeland hit his first homer this season, pulling the Dodgers within 2-1. Later in the same inning, Mookie Betts hit a three-run homer, his first this season, and drove Shohei Ohtani and Tucker home ahead of him. It put the Dodgers up 4-2 at that point.
But the Dbacks rallied to tie things up in the top of the fourth inning. Thomas doubled to right, bringing home Smith and Carlos Santana. Thomas tried stretching his hit out to a triple, but Tucker hit Freeland, who then threw to third baseman Max Muncy. Muncy tagged out Thomas.
That's how things stood until the Dodgers rallied in their half of the eighth inning.
Edgardo Henriquez, the sixth Dodgers pitcher used by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, got his first win this season in relief. Diaz got his first save.
For the Dbacks, Kevin Ginkel took the loss in relief.
The Dbacks will look for their first win this season as they wrap up their three-game series against the Dodgers on Saturday. First pitch will be at 8:10 p.m. ET (5:10 p.m. PT, 6:10 p.m. MT).
