The Arizona Diamondbacks dropped the second game of the big series against the Washington Nationals.

The Washington Nationals moved above .500 with Saturday's 5-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In a game that Washington needed to win to keep pace for now in the National League Wild Card race, they did just that to tie the series and set up a winner-take-all game on Sunday.

Arizona's loss snaps their brief four-game winning streak, but they can easily get back on top of their game if they can wrap up the series.

Nationals' early runs help edge out Diamondbacks

Most of the runs were produced in the third innings with the teams combining for six.

Arizona drew first blood in the top of the third inning when Gabriel Moreno singled to center field, driving in two runs before being thrown out after attempting to stretch the hit into a double.

That lead wouldn't last long as Nationals' star CJ Abrams hit an RBI double to center field in the bottom half of the inning.

Two batters later, Daylen Lile tripled to right field, giving Washington the 4-2 lead.

Abrams would add to the lead, smashing a solo home run 390 feet to make it 5-2 and put a bow on his nice outing.

The D-backs would attempt to make things interesting after James McCann gave the team its third run of the game with an RBI single in the seventh inning.

However, it wasn't enough as the Nationals were able to hold on to the 5-3 victory.

Although Mitch Pratt lasted longer on the mound than in his last outing at the beginning of the week, he takes the loss in his first career decision, going five complete innings and allowing seven hits on 92 pitches.

While it wasn't Foster Griffin's best outing, he picked up the win, tossing 108 total pitches over 6.2 innings, striking out only two batters while allowing six hits.

What does win mean for playoff race?

With the win and the Miami Marlins' loss, the Nationals have now moved up to just two games behind the final Wild Card spot.

This makes Sunday's game essentially a tiebreaker as whoever takes the series will own it as the season winds down.

Arizona would still have the slight edge even after a loss on Sunday, but it puts pressure on them, as they could have only a half-game lead for the third Wild Card spot, depending on how the teams around them in the standings perform.
