The All-Star outfielder cemented his status as a historic dual-threat weapon, surpassing legends like DiMaggio to become the fastest player to join baseball’s exclusive 100-50-100 club.
Corbin Carroll’s latest career milestone has placed him in a category of his own. And, further established him as the franchise cornerstone that the Arizona Diamondbacks hoped he would become.
Carroll hit the 100th home run of his career against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. He launched a 390-foot opposite-field home run to left field against Brennan Bernardino in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The blast reduced Colorado’s advantage to two runs in a 6-4 game, although the Diamondbacks ultimately could not complete the comeback.
Carroll’s solid career so far
Despite the 6-4 loss, Carroll’s milestone produced another remarkable piece of MLB history.
The All-Star became the only player in MLB history to record at least 100 home runs, 50 triples, and 100 stolen bases within his first 650 career games.
Carroll accomplished all three milestones in only 606 games.
He also became the third-fastest player in MLB history to reach 100 home runs and 50 triples, trailing only Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees.
Those accomplishments represent considerably more than individual milestones.
Since arriving in 2022, Carroll has continually strengthened his résumé while helping put Arizona in better positions to compete.
The Diamondbacks selected him with their first pick in the 2019 draft (16th overall), believing he possessed the potential to develop into a star who could lead the franchise to success.
That expectation has come to fruition and then some.
Carroll has reached 100 career home runs, leads all active players in triples and has broken franchise records, all while playing only his fourth full MLB season.
He has not needed to actively chase records. They have arrived through his hard work, consistency and continued development into the centerpiece Arizona always believed he could become.
Carroll’s impact
Carroll’s combination of power and speed creates multiple ways to influence a game. He can drive the baseball for extra bases, pressure defenses with his athleticism and create opportunities through aggressive baserunning.
His ability to hit Wednesday’s milestone home run to the opposite field also demonstrates that his power is not limited to pulling the baseball. That gives pitchers fewer comfortable areas in which to attack him.
Carroll’s consistency is equally important for a player carrying the expectations associated with becoming the face of a franchise. Arizona drafted him with enormous hopes, and he has continued developing while accepting an increasingly prominent role.
His work ethic and constant development have allowed those natural tools to translate into sustained MLB success.
That is what makes Wednesday’s achievement larger than one home run.
