A strained left glute sidelines Michael Soroka, forcing the injury-plagued Arizona Diamondbacks rotation to pivot.
The Arizona Diamondbacks suffered another setback to a rotation that has already been stretched by injuries.
Michael Soroka was placed on the 15-day Injured List on Saturday because of a strained left glute, creating another layer of uncertainty for a staff that can hardly afford additional losses.
Soroka’s injury occurred during Friday’s start against the Minnesota Twins.
After completing the first inning (surrendering two hits), the right-hander experienced the issue while warming up before returning to the mound for the second.
That immediately ended his outing and forced Arizona into another difficult adjustment.
The early departure now guarantees he will remain sidelined through at least the beginning of July.
Depending on how recovery progresses, there is still a possibility that Soroka could return and make additional starts before the All-Star break.
For now, Arizona has moved quickly to add depth.
The Diamondbacks recalled Philip Abner from Triple-A Reno to provide extra bullpen support while the organization evaluates how to manage the rotation.
The timing is especially difficult because Soroka had become one of Arizona’s most dependable starters.
Soroka is 8-3 with a 3.07 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 82 innings across 15 starts this season,
He has recorded 79 strikeouts and issued only 17 walks.
That level of consistency has made him one of the few stabilizing forces in the rotation.
Arizona’s broader situation only magnifies the concern.
Corbin Burnes and Ryne Nelson also remain unavailable because of injury.
That currently leaves Eduardo Rodríguez, Merrill Kelly, Jose Cabrera, Mitch Bratt, and the struggling Zac Gallen as the healthy rotation options.
The Diamondbacks now face difficult decisions regarding workload management and internal replacements while hoping Soroka’s absence remains brief.
Beyond the statistics, Soroka’s value extends into qualities that have shaped his career.
One of his strongest traits is resilience.
He has repeatedly worked through setbacks and continued finding ways to contribute.
Another defining quality is composure.
Soroka rarely allows difficult moments to speed him up emotionally.
He also brings discipline and consistency in preparation, qualities that help create stability across a pitching staff.
Those characteristics often become even more important during stretches when a team is forced to navigate uncertainty.
Arizona will now wait to see whether Soroka’s latest setback becomes a short interruption or another major challenge in an already difficult season.
His presence also brings accountability and confidence to teammates around him. That influence becomes especially valuable during difficult stretches when rotations are forced to adapt quickly.
