Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Mitch Bratt stifled the San Diego Padres with a record-breaking, one-hit gem, cementing his place in the record books.
The Arizona Diamondbacks received exactly what they needed Wednesday night from one of the youngest pitchers on their roster.
Locked in a crucial four-game series against the San Diego Padres, Arizona handed the ball to rookie left-hander Mitch Bratt for just the sixth start of his MLB career.
The Padres entered the series as the Diamondbacks’ closest challenger for the third and final National League Wild Card spot, making every game carry postseason implications.
Despite entering the night with a 5.23 ERA in 20.2 innings, Bratt delivered the best performance of his young career.
A performance for the ages
The 23-year-old dominated San Diego, surrendering just one hit while striking out nine batters in seven scoreless innings to lead Arizona to a 10-4 victory.
The performance immediately placed Bratt alongside some of the best rookie outings in franchise history.
According to Bob Nightengale from USA TODAY, Bratt became only the second rookie pitcher in Diamondbacks history to throw at least seven scoreless innings, surrender one hit or fewer, and strike out at least eight batters in a game.
He joined Zac Gallen in accomplishing the feat.
Bratt’s outing also earned a place in the MLB record books.
He became the only rookie left-handed pitcher in MLB history to throw at least seven innings, surrender no more than one hit, strike out at least nine batters, throw fewer than 100 pitches, and earn the victory.
The Canadian left-hander also added another milestone.
According to StatsCentre, his nine-strikeout performance is the second-highest strikeout total in a single MLB game by a Canadian-born rookie age 23 or younger.
It was a statement performance at an important time for Arizona.
The Diamondbacks are fighting to return to the postseason after missing it in 2025, and Bratt appears ready to play an important role during the stretch run.
Arizona acquired Bratt from the Texas Rangers in last season’s trade that sent veteran starter Merrill Kelly to the Lone Star State.
Originally selected by the Rangers in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Bratt has now rewarded the Diamondbacks’ confidence with one of the most memorable rookie performances in franchise history.
Bratt’s emergence
Bratt has consistently demonstrated poise beyond his years, never appearing overwhelmed by the moment despite making only a handful of MLB starts. That composure allows him to attack experienced hitters with confidence rather than pitching cautiously.
