The Arizona Diamondbacks have been battling hard with the Kansas City Royals, and they beat them again on Tuesday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks notched their second extra-innings win in as many nights on Tuesday, beating the Kansas City Royals 5-3 at Kauffman Stadium.
The Diamondbacks have now won four games in a row and five of their last six. How did they get it done on Tuesday in the 11-inning battle?
Not giving an inch
For the first seven innings of Tuesday’s contest, neither team could get on the scoreboard.
On Arizona’s side, right-hander Corbin Burnes made his long-awaited season debut, and the 31-year-old former Cy Young Award winner provided three innings of work in a limited return to the mound as his workload ramps up.
In those three innings, Burnes struck out two batters while allowing two walks and two hits. Afterward, manager Torey Lovullo went to his bullpen and relied on six relievers to get through the rest of the game.
Of the relievers who took the mound, right-hander Dennis Santana had the best outing. In one inning of work, he struck out three batters and allowed one hit.
Left-hander Blake Walston closed the game and earned the win, but he was also assessed a blown save. While the Diamondbacks’ pitchers were hard at work against the Royals’ lineup, the latter’s pitchers were not letting anything come easy, either.
Right-hander Michael Wacha got the starting nod for Kansas City, and even though he gave up four walks, he threw six shutout innings. Arizona’s hitters could not convert against him. After Wacha’s evening was over, the Royals also had six relievers take the mound.
Battling late
In the top of the eighth inning, the Diamondbacks finally broke through when Geraldo Perdomo hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to bring Ketel Marte home.
In the top of the ninth, Tim Tawa hit a leadoff solo home run to give Arizona a 2-0 advantage, but it was soon squandered when reliever Juan Morillo gave up a two-run home run to Kansas City’s John Rave that tied the game.
In the 10th inning, Arizona got on the board again thanks to Tawa, when he hit an RBI single to give the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead, but the Royals would not go away.
In the bottom of the 10th, a wild pitch by Walston and a sacrifice fly allowed Kansas City to tie the game again. But in the 11th, Arizona finally did enough to get away when Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit an RBI triple, and Marte followed up with an RBI sacrifice fly.
The Diamondbacks will try and sweep the Royals on Wednesday at 4:40 p.m. MST.
