The Arizona Diamondbacks do not expect Corbin Carroll's right elbow injury to sideline him for an extended period after he exited Sunday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks appear to have avoided a major injury concern after outfielder Corbin Carroll hyperextended his right elbow during Sunday's 8-7 extra-inning victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
The injury occurred in the seventh inning when Carroll awkwardly hyperextended his elbow on a swing-and-miss strikeout.
He immediately showed signs of discomfort, grimacing as he completed the swing, but remained in the game and took the field for the next two defensive innings.
Because the injury involved his right elbow rather than his throwing arm, Carroll was able to stay in the game defensively while hoping the discomfort would subside before his next trip to the plate.
Removed before final plate appearance
When Carroll's spot in the batting order came up again in the ninth inning, Arizona opted for a pinch hitter instead. Jorge Barrosa entered the game in his place but was retired on strikes, ending Carroll's afternoon at the plate.
Following the game, Carroll indicated the elbow had not improved enough for another at-bat, even after remaining in the game defensively. While he acknowledged the injury could require a day of rest, there was no indication that he expects a lengthy absence.
Manager Torey Lovullo also downplayed the severity of the injury, expressing optimism that Carroll had avoided anything serious. The club did not plan to send Carroll for imaging after the game, another encouraging sign that the organization believes the injury is relatively minor.
Diamondbacks hoping for quick return
Arizona can ill afford to be without one of its cornerstone players for long, even as Carroll has endured a difficult stretch at the plate in July.
The 2023 National League Rookie of the Year has struggled offensively in recent weeks, but he remains one of the Diamondbacks' most dynamic players thanks to his combination of power, speed and defensive value.
His presence at the top of the lineup continues to be an important part of Arizona's playoff aspirations.
For now, all signs point toward the Diamondbacks avoiding a significant setback. Carroll's availability over the next few days will likely depend on how quickly the soreness subsides, but the absence of further testing suggests the club expects the injury to be manageable rather than something that results in a trip to the Injured List.
