The Arizona Diamondbacks have yet to find their stride.
The Arizona Diamondbacks produced a dominant 8-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, which in turn earned them the series victory.
It was a positive step for Arizona, who has had a rocky season, and it may even serve as momentum to string together more wins, but there is a lot of work to do. The work does not stop at the players or the coaches, but extends to the front office and general manager Mike Hazen as well.
Recently, Hazen joined the Wolf and Luke on Arizona Sports show to discuss a variety of topics surrounding the Diamondbacks. He covered talking points that included the difficulty of his job, which compels him to keep planning ahead on a year-round basis, he also talked about the recent struggles of Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen on the mound and his belief in them.
Toward the end of the segment, Hazen discussed the responsibility of the team's best players, such as Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo to turn their skill sets into results and to "carry" what the Diamondbacks are doing throughout most of the week.
"It's high expectation that comes with the territory," Hazen said. "They're old enough now, they're mature enough now that they need to be the ones carrying the load and let the Tommy Troys and the [Ryan] Waldschmidts and the [Jorge] Barossas and the [LuJames} Groovers of the world just be the cherry on the sundae.
"And we're working through that," Hazen added. "We're working through that."
Hazen also admitted that the Diamondbacks have not found their stride and he likened their struggles to those endured in the 2024 season.
"We haven't hit our stride yet this year," Hazen said. "There's good and bad with that. It's been a struggle to this point, but you know in 2024, I believe when we were grinding through the first half of the season, we didn't you know, Gino had a five-something OPS, I think Corbin was struggling."
Despite missing the playoffs in 2024, the Diamondbacks still finished with an 89-73 record, and Eugenio Suarez hit .256 with 30 home runs.
"And then we were lights out offensively for the rest of the season with the same group of players," Hazen said. "I think I believe that maybe with a little less power, The Gino Suarez sort of power surge that we got out of that. We have good hitters in our lineup that are capable of putting up five to six runs a night. We start getting that, we're gonna go on a winning streak."
