The Arizona Diamondbacks placed rookie Tommy Troy on the 10-day Injured List with a right shoulder sprain.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will begin the second half of the season without rookie outfielder Tommy Troy, who was placed on the 10-day Injured List because of a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder.
The move was made during the All-Star break and retroactive to July 12, allowing Arizona to maximize the backdating period before opening a key series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Because the club is currently on its break, it is expected to announce a corresponding roster move before Friday's opener.
Troy will be sidelined for at least the first week of the second half, forcing the Diamondbacks to once again adjust an outfield that has dealt with inconsistent production and injuries throughout the season.
More playing time for young outfielders
Troy had recently stepped into a larger role after Jordan Lawlar returned to the Injured List, giving Arizona another young player to evaluate as it tries to remain in the National League Wild Card race.
With Troy unavailable, Ryan Waldschmidt, one of the organization's top prospects, is expected to receive additional opportunities alongside Corbin Carroll in the outfield.
Veteran outfielders Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Max Kepler are also likely to continue sharing playing time as the Diamondbacks search for offensive consistency.
Neither veteran has produced at the level Arizona hoped for this season, while Waldschmidt is still adjusting to major-league pitching after his recent promotion.
Trade deadline needs to continue to grow
Arizona entered the All-Star break just a few games out of a postseason spot, but injuries have complicated the club's plans ahead of the trade deadline.
Adding offense already appeared to be a priority, particularly at first base, and Troy's absence only strengthens the case for seeking additional outfield help if the Diamondbacks remain buyers over the next few weeks.
The pitching staff has also become an area of concern after injuries sidelined Ryne Nelson, Michael Soroka, and Zac Gallen.
Gallen's status remains uncertain
General manager Mike Hazen said veteran starter Zac Gallen is seeking a second medical opinion after landing on the Injured List with elbow inflammation earlier this month.
No timetable has been established for Gallen's return, adding uncertainty to a rotation that has already been stretched by multiple injuries. The right-hander has struggled through the first half of the season, posting a career-high 6.34 ERA across 19 starts.
With both the lineup and rotation facing significant questions, the Diamondbacks will enter the second half needing healthier performances internally while weighing potential additions before the trade deadline.
