Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo trusts Corbin Carroll’s elite preparation and maturity to overcome his slump.
Arizona Diamondbacks star Corbin Carroll has endured a difficult stretch at the plate, and whenever a player of his caliber struggles, questions are inevitable.
Carroll has gone 6-for-67 since June 28, creating concern among fans and observers.
Those concerns are understandable considering what happened during the 2024 season.
Just two years ago, Carroll battled through a prolonged sophomore slump that affected much of his then second full MLB campaign.
Manager Torey Lovullo, however, does not believe the current situation resembles what unfolded in 2024.
In his view, both the player and the circumstances are completely different.
Lovullo made that clear while discussing Carroll’s recent struggles.
He explained that Carroll was still establishing himself during his second season in MLB and was continuing to learn about himself as a player.
According to the Diamondbacks manager, those experiences helped Carroll grow and better understand how to navigate difficult stretches.
Carroll’s impact beyond the numbers
Carroll is hitting .250 with a .344 OBP, a .480 SLG, and an .824 OPS.
While that OPS is lower than every full season of his career except for 2024, it remains far from the production of an unproductive hitter.
His overall contributions continue extending well beyond the batter’s box.
Carroll has developed into one of the team’s leaders while also providing outstanding defense in right field throughout the season.
Lovullo expressed complete confidence that Carroll will eventually work his way out of the slump.
He described Carroll as a unique player capable of enduring difficult stretches without allowing them to define him.
The manager also explained that Carroll follows an exceptionally detailed process that few people fully understand.
He praised the outfielder’s elite work habits and preparation, emphasizing that Carroll belongs among the small group of players capable of operating at the highest level of the sport.
Carroll’s All-Star responsibilities also shortened his break compared to many of his teammates.
The 25-year-old appeared in the All-Star Game for the third time in his career.
Carroll’s mindset
Lovullo said Carroll returned on Wednesday before joining the team for workouts on Thursday as Arizona prepared for the second half of the season.
Carroll has consistently earned praise for his maturity, preparation, and relentless pursuit of improvement. He approaches every challenge with the same level of focus regardless of recent results.
“Corbin is working hard, and that’s what we want to see, and we want to have him continue doing the right things and having very positive results and just, and keep migrating north,” Lovullo told reporters, including PHNX Sports.
Rather than allowing slumps to change his routine, he remains committed to the process that has made him one of baseball’s brightest young stars.
His athleticism allows him to impact games in multiple ways, while his defensive instincts and energy make him valuable even when the hits are not falling.
Carroll also embraces responsibility as one of the faces of the organization despite his young age.
He’s earned the trust of teammates and coaches, who continue believing he has the mindset and determination to quickly overcome difficult stretches.
